Luxury holidays in Prince Edward County

An island province lapped by Lake Ontario, Prince Edward County’s water-ringed remoteness has kept it a time-capsule of rural Canada’s charms. Quaint towns sport historic pastel-hued façades, and are home to galleries, Aladdin’s-cave antique stores and hip restaurants making mouthwatering use of the rolling farmland outside the window. Wash down lunch with a crisp white from one of the County’s hilltop wineries, then stroll out to Sandbanks Provincial Park, famed for its butter-soft beaches and lush humpback dunes.

When to go

Spring and summer have the best beach weather, but go in autumn for food festivals and fiery leaves, or in winter if lake skating and cross-country skiing appeal. Oenophiles, worry not, the wineries are open year-round.

Getting there

  • Planes

Toronto Pearson is the nearest international hub, a little over two hours away by car. Alternatively, travel from Ottawa International (a three-hour drive) or Montreal’s Pierre Elliott Trudeau (a four-hour drive).
  • Automobiles

The County is two hours from Toronto by car and around three-and-a-half hours from Montreal. You’ll want your own wheels for touring the island – the Loyalist Parkway links all the main towns, but keep a look-out for signs pointing you towards special arts and tasting trails.
