Luxury holidays in Healdsburg

Old-school Americana charm wears a trendy top coat in Sonoma County’s Healdsburg – take a turn about the leafy Victorian plaza to the tunes from the bandstand, then sip prestigious local tipples in elegant tasting salons and soak them up with Michelin-starred fare, artisan patisserie or farmers’-market treats. Hike or bike hillside trails through venerated vineyards to continue your sampling at the source – the town’s superb spas are always waiting to soothe sore limbs (and heads) afterwards.

When to go

Spring, summer and autumn are all warm and sunny, ideal for hill-hiking and vineyard-cycling. Aim for September or October to see the wineries in full harvest flow.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly direct into Sonoma County Airport from certain US cities, including Dallas, Los Angeles and Seattle. If you’re coming from further afield, you’re spoiled for choice: touch down in Sacramento or Oakland from a range of North American cities, or in San Francisco from a host of domestic and international options. It’s a 90-minute drive from both San Francisco and Oakland, and two hours from Sacramento. Otherwise, take the Sonoma County Airport Express bus from the airports in San Francisco or Oakland to Sonoma County, then hop in a taxi for the 16-kilometre drive to Healdsburg.
  • Automobiles

You’ll need a car to tour the vineyards and picnic-primed scenery; hire one from any of the nearby airports.
