When to go

The blues and greens of the Basque Country are at their most vibrant from May through September. Spring and autumn are quieter but bring less predictable weather, which, with a little four-season packing, is no obstacle to off-season adventures.

Getting there

• Planes

  Hondarribia is closer to San Sebastián airport than San Sebastián is – just a five-minute drive from Arrivals. Biarritz over the French border rolls into second place. Both have good European connections, especially over summer months.

• Automobiles

  The Basque Country is served by Renfe trains rolling east from Bilbao, but for the freedom to explore the Cantabrian coastline, wend inland to the Pyrenean foothills, and head north to Biarritz and St Jean de Luz, a car is advisable.
