Luxury holidays in Speightstown

Serving up a sunny cocktail of Barbados’s colonial heritage and authentic island life, Speightstown has undergone a modernising makeover thanks to a spate of swish new developments. Choose your favourite of the town’s crayon-box colonial buildings, then make yourself at home at Arlington House, an 18th-century mansion turned museum charting the local history. If your tan needs topping up, a bounty of beaches beckon – time your visit right to spot turtles hatching on the sands – then see out the day with a sunset stroll along the seafront esplanade.

When to go

Go between December and April for the balmiest weather. Rainy season (from June to November) is when you’ll dodge the crowds – despite the mood-dampening moniker, short showers peppering sunny days are much more likely than downpours; just be aware that September and October have the highest hurricane risk.

Getting there

  • Planes

It’s a 45-minute drive to Speightstown from Grantley Adams International Airport. Fly there direct from London, Manchester, Frankfurt, and several US and Caribbean cities.
  • Automobiles

Hire a car at the airport if you plan on exploring nearby towns and beaches. Otherwise, taxis are available once you land – check for the yellow sticker on the side of the cab before hopping in.
