June through August offers the finest climes for alfresco dining, but if you're eager to dodge the crowds and fully embrace the local culture, September and October are peak harvest time in this wine-growing region.

Getting there

• Planes

  Turin and Genoa airports are both about an hour's drive from Asti, while Milan Malpensa and Milan Linate are approximately 90 minutes away by road.

• Trains

  The town is served by the Turin-Genoa line. If your plans involve staying in Asti, a car is just excess baggage and you can hop on the well-connected buses to navigate around town or stick to taxis.

• Automobiles

  To access the all-important vineyards and the surrounding hills, you’ll need a noble steed (car), but be warned, the Roman roads of Asti are typically narrow.
