Luxury holidays in Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc may have made its name in fish sauce and peppercorns, but these days Vietnam’s largest island has rather more on the menu. More than half of it is protected by a national park, with jungle-clad mountains and hiking trails filling the north, while beaches ring much of the coast and the warm waters of the Gulf of Thailand invite snorkelling, diving and island-hopping. Nose around pepper farms, seek out fishing villages and seafood markets, or head south to the An Thoi archipelago to sail between palm-fringed islets.

When to go

November to April brings Phu Quoc’s driest, sunniest weather, with calm seas primed for swimming and snorkelling. May to October is wetter, with tropical downpours and rougher seas, though showers are often short-lived.

Getting there

  • Planes

    Phu Quoc International Airport is the island’s main gateway, around 20 minutes’ drive from Duong Dong. There are frequent direct flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, plus international connections from Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Taipei and Seoul. There are currently no direct flights from London, but you can reach Phu Quoc with one stop in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, or several major Asian hubs.

  • Trains

    There are no trains on Phu Quoc. If you’re travelling overland through Vietnam, make your way to the mainland ports of Ha Tien or Rach Gia, where regular ferries and high-speed boats cross to the island.

  • Automobiles

    You can happily go car-free if beach-bound, but Pho Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island, so four wheels come in handy for venturing further. Taxis are readily available, or ask your hotel to arrange a private car and driver for a day of exploring.
