Our favourite rooms

All villas come packed with delightful quirks — Vietnamese nón lá bamboo hats, bold kimono-style bathrobes, alfresco jungle bathrooms with monsoon showers — but the Beach Front Pool Villa is the best of all worlds, with a sizeable pool, outdoor tub and some of the most gaze-drawing sea views in the resort. Bigger crews can have it large at the Beachfront Pool Residence, with a trio of bedrooms and space for up to six.

Poolside

Take your pick from two beachfront infinity pools at Green Bay Phu Quoc: there’s one right in the heart of the resort, just in front of Palm Bistro. The second lies at the eastern end by Gió restaurant and appears to float right above the ocean.

Spa

When a resort includes ‘spa’ in its name, it has plenty to live up to, and Xả Spa doesn’t disappoint. A peaceful, jungle-canopied network of low-rise huts, wooden walkways and alfresco treatment areas, it promises a broad range of options from ancient Vietnamese reflexology to modern massage therapies. As well as eight treatment rooms, there’s a sauna, a steam bath, an ice bath, a Jacuzzi and more. It’s open daily from 9am until 6pm.

Packing tips

Don’t get caught out mistaking your myrtle for your mangroves or confusing barbets with bee-eaters in this naturalists’ paradise; bring a pocket guide to Vietnam’s flora and fauna and you’ll soon find yourself coming over all Attenborough.

There’s a large fitness centre shaded by tropical vegetation, and a wooden deck in the jungle plays host to free, daily sunrise yoga sessions at 7am; kayaks, paddle boards, snorkelling equipment and more are available at the beach.

Children

Very welcome. There’s a free daily kids’ club between 10am and 5pm and a playroom with soft toys, board games and table football that stays open until 10pm. Kids are allowed to use both outdoor pools, and some villas can sleep up to six.

Activities

There’s a free daily kids’ club that runs 10am–5pm, and a playroom with toys, games, table football and a cool gallery of native butterflies. There’s kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling, tennis and beach volleyball, and even a massage designed for five-13-year-olds at Xả Spa.

Kids are welcome in both main swimming pools and there are lifeguards in attendance at each.

Meals

There's no specific kids’ menu, but adventurous palates can try new things in Gió, and Palm Bistro has plenty of child-friendly options, including burgers, pizzas and French fries. Both restaurants also have extensive dessert menus.

Sustainability efforts

Green by name and nature, Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort & Spa is constructed largely from reclaimed timber alongside locally sourced soil and stone, designed to melt into the landscape. Some of the villas are built around native trees rather than removing them. More than two-thirds of the site’s original vegetation has been retained, and many new fruit-bearing trees have been planted throughout the resort to preserve the rich jungle habitat that’s home to many butterflies, birds, lizards and monkeys. Phu Quoc is renowned for its seafood, so it stands to reason that the restaurant serves fish so fresh you probably encountered it on your morning dip. Other kitchen essentials like honey, fish sauce and pepper are all produced locally, and seasonal herbs and fruits are often harvested from the resort’s kitchen garden. Water is distilled and bottled (in glass) at the resort and, no matter how hard you might snoop, you won’t find single-use plastics anywhere. LED lighting runs on timers and motion sensors, and there are plans to install solar panels to provide renewable energy. And those little buggies ferrying guests around the grounds? They’re battery powered.

You can dine right by the water’s edge at Gió — pole position as the setting sun turns the sky into a fruity palette of juicy oranges, rambutan reds and mangosteen purples.

Dress Code

None, but there’s nothing to stop you giving it the full tropical treatment here. The resort shop is chock-full of bright, botanical-print shirts, sarongs and summer dresses, all locally made.

Hotel restaurant

Beneath swaying palms and overlooking the main pool, Palm Bistro is the resort’s all-day international restaurant. Residing in a soaring open-air pavilion, its splendid conical ceiling resembles traditional Vietnamese hats which has the bonus effect of circulating balmy gulf breezes. On the seafront at the resort’s eastern end, Gió celebrates modern Asian cuisine, with a special focus on freshly caught Phu Quoc seafood. Catch the sunset while tucking into Vietnamese spring rolls and steamed soy seabass.  

Hotel bar

Hopeless romantics, point your sandals towards Coral (open from 4pm to 11pm), where fruity cocktails and swoon-worthy sunsets make for quite the intoxicating combo. Set right on the beach, Coral’s menu includes classic mai tais and mojitos as well as a signature Banana Fashion and vodka-laced Sun Kiss Mule, with its potent kick of ginger and lemongrass. The inspired tapas selection runs the gamut from pan-fried Hokkaido scallops to tropical fruit skewers. Book ahead if you want to snag the private table at the end of the little jetty. 

The pool bar is open during the day for snacks, drinks and cocktails within easy reach of your sunlounger. 

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am to10am, lunch from11am to 3pm, afternoon tea from 3pm to 3.45pm, and dinner from 5pm to 10pm in Palm Bistro. Gió is open for breakfast and dinner at the same times as Palm Bistro.

Room service

Available from 11am until 10pm, with last orders at 9.30pm. You can also pre-order floating breakfasts to be delivered to your private pool in the morning.

Cast away on jungle-shrouded shores in the island’s north-west, Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort & Spa overlooks the Gulf of Thailand from a secluded spot near Cua Can village.

Planes

Phu Quoc International Airport is a 45-minute drive south from the resort. Private return transfers are included for Smith guests.

Automobiles

It’s worth renting a scooter for the flexibility to discover some of Phu Quoc’s more hidden (read: unspoiled) beaches. It’s also relatively inexpensive to hire a private driver by the day if you don’t fancy taking on those unpaved roads and roving cattle yourself. The resort also runs a free shuttle to Duong Dong every morning at 10.30am (returning at 1.30pm). There’s private parking at the resort.

Other

Steady your sea legs for a scenic boat ride across jade-green waters from the mainland to Phu Quoc. The journey takes up to three hours by ferry from Hà Tiên (or about half that by high-speed boat), and between two-and-a-half to three hours (high-speed) from Rạch Giá. The resort operates a return transfer service from the port.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you’re not rising with nature as your alarm clock and rocking a downward dog with the resident yoga master at sun-up, you’re probably not doing Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort & Spa right. But if 7am’s a little too perky for you, there’s always the option of beach yoga later in the day. Try your hand at the wealth of analogue water sports available at the resort’s peaceful private beach, where kayaks, snorkelling equipment and paddleboards are free to borrow, and the silence is more likely to be broken by the chattering of native long-tailed macaques than the roar of a jet ski. 

Foragers and foodies can get to grips with net fishing in the Gulf of Thailand, as well as harvesting herbs and vegetables from the resort’s kitchen garden, before experiencing a Vietnamese cooking class. Work it all off on a bike ride along lush jungle trails to nearby Cua Can village or Vung Bau beach, or go all out on an epic spin through Phu Quoc National Park with its steamy rainforests, wild tropical orchids and flamboyant birdlife, including kingfishers, barbets and the prehistoric-looking great hornbill. 

Local restaurants

Besides the neighbouring resorts, there aren’t many dining alternatives in the immediate vicinity of Green Bay. However, it’s worth striking out for the seaside village of Cua Can at least once. Around 10 kilometres south of the resort, it has a smattering of solid beachfront options. Seek out Camia for its superlative sunsets and Phu Quoc seafood so fresh it might have leapt straight out of the sea and onto your plate. Or opt for the homely, family-run Wood House nearby. A little further south along the coast, the de facto island capital of Duong Dong is home to the lively Phu Quoc Night Market, an intoxicating (if somewhat touristy) mecca for Vietnamese street food. Try banh mi, grilled seafood skewers and coconut ice cream for the win.

The first thing you notice when you step inside Green Bay Phu Quoc Resort & Spa is how private and peaceful the whole place feels. There are nearly 100 sustainable villas sequestered in the jungle here, but you’d barely know it from the few residents you encounter on mindful meanders along its quiet lanes and wooden walkways. A gentle symphony of birdsong provides the soundtrack to spa time, long, languid days by the pool, and Vietnamese dining on the bay as native bulbuls and babblers trill beneath the canopy of casuarina trees, mangroves and rose myrtle. And you’re no further from nature at your villa, where outdoor rainfall showers, jungle-view terraces and handmade design flourishes like bamboo rocking chairs and woven lampshades — as well as the occasional curious gecko — have you feeling at one with the jungle. Albeit with the kinds of luxury indulgences (massages, mai tais and more) island castaways could only dream of.
