When to go

Summer boasts the warmest weather, but go in late March and early September for a less bustling break with still-pleasant temperatures. Brave the chill of late autumn for crowd-free streets and free-reign sightseeing – and to make the most of cosy café stops.

Getting there

  • Planes

Schiphol Airport is among the biggest European hubs. From the UK alone, fly there from London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Belfast and more. Flights from other European cities including Dublin, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Frankfurt and Prague also touch down there – ideal for Continental city-hopping – or get there direct from further-flung cities including New York, Toronto, Hong Kong and Shanghai. From the airport, hop on the train to Amsterdam Centraal Station, then take Route 52 on the metro or the Line 24 tram to De Pijp.
  • Automobiles

Narrow streets and pricey parking on one hand, extensive public transport and strollable streets on the other – skipping the car rental just makes sense.
