Thirty-one Degrees
Style White-hot coastal hideaway
Setting Blissful Oak Beach
Tucked between the Daintree Rainforest and the Coral Sea, just south of Port Douglas, Thirty-one Degrees takes its measured moniker from the area's enviable year-round temperature. Since Australian interiors guru David Katon gave the 1970s fisherman's cottage a dazzling all-white makeover, this two-bedroom retreat has been named one of the world's best holiday houses. Don't worry, though, the accolade hasn't gone to its head – this carefree coastal escape is still best enjoyed with a sarong slung around your hips and sand between your toes.

- Gardens This deep, narrow block is front-and-centre on the Coral Sea, with the rainforest at its back and pebbled, palm-spiked gardens giving on to the soft sands of Oak Beach. Hammocks are trussed between coconut trees, and cushioned day-beds dot the way to the water's edge.
- Private parking There's ample parking on the street.

In the know
Eating and drinking
A stay here is all about blending inside and out, so cook up a storm in the kitchen or at the barbecue, then take your pick of a 10-seater table indoors, the alfresco set-up by the beach, or a palm-shaded picnic on the sand.
Housekeeping
This low-fuss holiday home is only cleaned between stays. Additional housekeeping can be arranged for a fee, but as sandy feet are de rigueur, we reckon you should just go with the flow.
Entertainment
The living room has a flatscreen TV, DVD/CD player and a savvy selection of music, films, books, games and magazines.
Provided
All linen, including beach towels, stinger suits (you'll need them from November to March to dodge the jellyfish), body boards, fishing rods, snorkel sets, flippers, flip-flops, candles and mosquito coils.
Also
Rejuvenate after a dip or a day in the sun with the thoughtfully provided Aveda products.
