Temple Guiting Manor

Cotswolds, United Kingdom

Best picnic spot

Have a picnic at Blenheim Palace (www.blenheimpalace.com). Great views can be enjoyed from Cleeve Hill overlooking Cheltenham and Tewkesbury, Broadway or Snowshill. Bourton-on-the-Water is just a few miles from Stow-on-the-Wold, with idyllic riverside scenery.

Best walks

Wander around Cotswold Way, admiring the scenic surroundings and the pretty pubs – reward your exertions with a local ale or two. Gloucestershire Way is another famous ramble, which weaves through the Forest of Dean. Plenty of other options are listed on www.cotswoldswalks.com or www.southcotswoldramblers.com, and you can join an organised walk via www.coatuk.co.uk (they can also arrange canoeing and other sports). Walk around Broadway, exploring the boutiques and tea-shops – stop for a cream-and-jam-slathered scone at the Lygon Arms (+44 (0)1386 852255). Bourton-on-the-water, Bourton-on-the-hill, Bibury and Upper and Lower Slaughter are pretty villages and towns, all worthy of an afternoon’s exploring.

Shopping

There is a well-stocked Budgens supermarket in Moreton-in-Marsh (+44 (0)1608 651854) and a gargantuan Tesco at Stow-on-the-Wold (+44 (0)845 677 9630).

Activities

Create your own bespoke house party using Temple Guiting’s enviable black book. Some of the top names from the worlds of food and drink, house and garden, country pursuits and health and beauty are on hand, to inspire guests and teach them new skills. The owners will tailor-make individual breaks, combining delicious food, fabulous wines and local treats. Make the perfect Italian feast with Theo Randall, or learn the art of shucking oysters and smoking a kipper with Mark Hix. Spend an afternoon with celebrity florist Nikki Tibbles, creating wonderful table displays, or make sweet creations with Chantal Coady, queen of chocolates. From bridge and poker to crocheting and knitting, pie-raising and bread-baking, to singing and photography, any combination is possible. Arrive to champagne and a massage, then sit down to a Michelin-starred dinner. The owners can advise on combinations, put the whole party together and organise every last detail. If you want to venture out, Stratford-upon-Avon has plenty of historic architecture to admire, and there are beautiful walks along the river. Head to Cheltenham for a spot of racing, then browse the shops and galleries.
