Staying Cool Rotunda

Birmingham, United Kingdom

Intro

The Rotunda couldn’t be closer to the Birmingham’s premier shopping complex, the Bullring, unless you rebuilt it in Selfridges. All the other attractions of the city – gastronomic, cultural and commercial – are readily accessible.

Best picnic spot

Birmingham is admittedly short on rural idylls, but Brindley Place, the cute canalside collection of shops and restaurants is also a great spot to settle down on the grass by the water with a hamper to enjoy a leisurely outdoor meal.

Best walks

Famously but implausibly, Birmingham has ‘more canals than Venice’, and treading the towpaths can be a wonderful way to work up an appetite. Guided waterway walks are arranged by www.birmingham-tours.co.uk. The tourist office at the foot of the Rotunda can supply routes for the city’s Gateway trails – urban rambles through the city’s history sprinkled with architectural insights and pub-quiz factoids.

Shopping

Staying Cool has Bullring-side seats for the best shopping scene in the UK outside London. The Bullring itself is a gigantic Selfridges-led complex devoted to retail therapy, and the streets around the Rotunda are lined with high-street stalls and off-beat boutiques. For practical purposes, you can stock up on supplies at Sainsbury’s on nearby Union Street (Mon–Fri: 7am–9pm; Sat: 7am–8pm; Sun: 11am–5pm), or two minutes’ walk down the road at Tesco on New Street (Mon–Fri: 6am–12am; Sat: 6am–10pm; Sun: 12pm–6pm). If you want to spoil yourselves, however, Selfridges’ food hall boasts a cornucopia of tasty treats and is moments from the Rotunda (Mon–Fri: 10am–8pm; Sat 9am–8pm; Sun 10.30am–5pm).

Activities

Those who come to Birmingham expecting generic urban distractions will be pleasantly surprised – there’s a slew of unique diversions. The Electric Cinema (www.theelectric.co.uk) on Station Street is the UK’s oldest working fleapit (turning a hundred in 2009), boasting cosy sofas, a text-waiter ordering system, and a La Fée Parisian absinthe fountain. The Ikon gallery (www.ikon-gallery.co.uk) in Brindley Place fills an imposing former school building with two floors of temporary multimedia exhibitions, capped with a excellent tapas restaurant. Smaller Smiths will enjoy the Foster-designed Sea Life Centre, which all manner of marine life on display, including an underwater tunnel and a mirror maze.

Smith Tip

Birmingham’s art galleries are all worth a head-around-the-door, but two are especially ogle-able. The Custard Factory (www.custardfactory.com) is more than just a name –  it’s where Alfred Bird first started making the sweet yellow stuff. Now it’s a vast riverside complex housing 500 artist’s studios, galleries, cafés and shops. St Paul’s Gallery (www.stpaulsgallery.com) is home to the world’s largest collection of signed album artwork. So, if you’re after Peter Blake’s Sergeant Pepper, Bowie’s Hunky Dory or the Sex Pistols’ God Save the Queen, this is the place to whip out your chequebook.
