Staying Cool Manchester

Manchester, United Kingdom

Intro

All apartments are in the centre of Manchester, a few minutes walk from Deansgate.

Best picnic spot

If you have your own car, we suggest Alderley Edge, just north of Macclesfield. Otherwise, next to the fountains in Piccadilly Gardens.

Best walks

It’s great to stroll along the towpath of the Bridgewater canal, which runs through the centre of the city. There are guided walking tours focusing on various aspects of Manchester, particularly at weekends and in the summer. You can get more information at the Manchester Visitor Information Centre in St Peter’s Square where most of the walks start (www.visitmanchester.com). For the great outdoors, head to the Peak District, which is a short drive out to the east of the city (www.peakdistrict.org).

Shopping

Cathedral Quarter: Supermarket: Marks and Spencer is on Market Street on the other side of Blackfriars bridge (Monday to Thursday: 9am–8pm; Friday and Saturday: 8am–8pm; Sunday: 11am–5pm). There’s also a Sainsbury’s Local on the junction of Deansgate and Quay Street (Monday to Saturday 7am–11pm; Sunday 8am–10pm). Off-licence: Oddbins in the Barton Arcade on Deansgate (Monday to Saturday: 10am–7pm; Sunday: 12pm–5.30pm. Call +44 (0)161 834 7328. Deli: Harvey Nichols and Selfridges have food halls. Castlefield area: Supermarket: The Store on the ground floor of Moho stocks basic essentials (Daily: 8am–8pm). Sainsbury’s on Regent’s Road is about a five-minute walk away (Monday to Friday: 7am–11pm; Saturday: 7am–10pm; Sunday: 11am–5pm).

Activities

Manchester no longer closely resembles the gritty urban landscapes of LS Lowry but you can admire the artist's work (and the matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs) at the Lowry Gallery in Harbour City; take the tram from Piccadilly Gardens (www.thelowry.com). Manchester Art Gallery is on Mosley Street (www.manchestergalleries.org) and if you like the Staying Cool concept then you’ll love the cultural exhibition centre, Urbis (www.urbis.org.uk).

Smith Tip

Innovation is in the blood in Manchester. Among the lengthy list of ‘firsts’ the city can lay claim to are the first computer, the first splitting of the atom, the first Rolls Royce and the first railway station. The city’s creativity and ingenuity also carry over into popular culture; ever since the first Top of the Pops was broadcast from a church in Dickenson Road in Longsight, Mancunians have been telling the world that some of the greatest music and clubs can be found in the city. They may well have a point.
