Best beaches
You’re spoilt for choice here; pick from Pori, Perivolos, Perissa, Koloumbo or Kamari. Vlychada beach has dramatic cliffs lurking behind the beach, Red Beach has striking ruby-hued grains and Monolithos is a good family-friendly option.
Best walks
If you’re feeling energetic, walk to Oia in around two hours; to Fira in around 20 minutes; or to Skaros in half an hour. All three walks offer up views of the caldera cliffs, but Skaros is particularly dramatic.

Imerovigli has a supermarket and a grocery store stocked with local produce.
Activities
Take a boat-trip to one of the neighbouring islands and visit the caldera. Pick up some paintings and jewellery in Oia and the island’s capital, Fira, and alternate between the local beaches. Visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thira at Fira (+30 22860 23217) and visit the castle in Pyrgos. There are plenty of wineries nearby – visit Boutari in Megalochori village (+30 22860 81011; www.boutari.gr), or Sigalas in Oia (+30 22860 71644; www.sigalas-wine.gr).
