Rose Cottage

Wiltshire, United Kingdom

Best picnic spot

The sprawling green grounds of Fonthill Estate (www.fonthill.co.uk) provides the ideal grassy backdrop to a spread procured from Turnbulls in Shaftesbury.

Best beaches

If you do like to be beside the seaside, both Shell Bay near Poole and Studland Bay in Dorset are only an hour away by car.

Best walks

Stumble out the drive and you've already embarked on a beautiful country ramble. Directly behind the house is a 14-acre bird reserve which makes for a great 30-minute circular walk with kids. And if you're scared of vampires, make sure you go in April – you're sure to ward them off with a whirl through all this wild garlic. If you like to stick to marked country lanes, the roads here are quiet, but if you're feeling more intrepid, it is just as easy to traverse the tractor trails and fields surrounding the house.

Shopping

Buy, or better still, pick your own fresh vegetables and fruit from the walled garden at Pythouse. Then satisfy your carnivorous cravings from the estate, which also sells lamb, poultry and beef at the shop in the walled garden. Ludwell (on A30) has the most perfect small village shop that stocks high-quality products including wine and beer and it also houses a post office; next to Ludwell stores is T Buttlings, a fantastic butcher. Shaftesbury has many good local stores including Turnbulls delicatessen and café, as well as various grocers, a baker, a wine shop and a large Tesco. If you prefer Waitrose, drive a few miles further to Gillingham down the B3081.

Activities

Stourhead, Longleat and Wilton are all short drive away, but bang on your doorstep is the enchanting Old Wardour Castle. This 14th-century fortress was the setting for Robin Hood Prince of Thieves – it hosts lots of fairs and events for children; check out the English Heritage website for details. And if Shaftesbury’s famous Gold Hill looks familiar, it’s because you’ve probably seen it in the Hovis ads. If you like gardens, you'll want to go visit Heale Gardens near Wilton. Sport and leisure wise, you can pay and play at Rushmore Golf Club which is only 10 miles away and near a great eatery, the Musuem Inn (see the listing below). The estate also has an equestrian centre at Tollard Royal, access to two good tennis courts on the nearby Pythouse Estate (though you must speak to a member of the Smith travel team in advance so as to be given access and booking details), alternatively you can play (and swim) at Port Regis near Gillingham, and if you like hills Dorset is also great bike-riding country.

Smith Tip

If you’re used to hard water at home you'll love showertime here. Your skin may feel a little slippery at first, but thanks to the water-softening system you'll go home feeling like you've been at a spa. Not our most glamorous tip, but you know at Smith we're as much about practicalities as pampering, so it's also worth noting that you can use a lot less soap and detergent when washing.
