Port House
Style High-society hillside villa
Setting Port Maria perch
More colourful than the Jamaican flag, more refreshing than rum on the rocks, Port House’s hip interiors, ocean-facing pool and lush gardens exude Caribbean cool. The elegant dining room and sexy sitting room make early nights unlikely, but with the yoga deck, gym and on-site chef and butlers, the morning after will be plain sailing.

Bedrooms
Bedroom One: This serene white space has views of the pool and the sea beyond. The bed is the central feature: a wrought iron king-size, with a romantic canopy. There’s also a cosy sitting area with two plump white armchairs and a matching footstool.
Bedroom two: This room is decorated in blue and white, with a white four-poster king-size bed and ocean views. The sitting area has a white armchair and a wood-plank table, and the ensuite bathroom, tiled with mosaics, has a shower and bath.
Bedroom three: This bedroom is decorated in green, to match the garden views. The room has two large twin beds and an ensuite bathroom tiled with mosaics.
Bedroom four: Situated in a separate annex of the house, and slightly smaller than the others, this room is decorated in green and neutral tones, with a queen-size bed and an ensuite bathroom tiled in blue with a shower. This room connects to the TV room.
Bedroom five: The second annex room is decorated in sky blue and has two full-size beds. This is the only room without air conditioning, but there’s a ceiling fan. The room has a small, terracotta-tiled ensuite bathroom.

Kitchen
The kitchen is designed for staff to use, and is not a main feature of the property. -
Living room
Stepping into the sitting room is as refreshing as a gulp of ice-cold coconut milk – the white walls, white sofa and white floor are a cool and calm setting, pepped up with shots of colour from towering potted plants, an assortment of books, vivid prints, a lipstick-red framed mirror and a backgammon station. One wall is made up of shuttered screen doors which open onto the terrace, overlooking the gardens, ocean and hills. This room is the heart of the house, designed with socialising and relaxing in mind. It’s equally beautiful when dimly lit with lamps and chunky candles at night, or flooded with sunlight and sea views by day. -
Dining room
The dining room continues the living room’s formula of white walls and splashes of colour, with coral-cushioned chairs, a yellow and green print on the wall, a striking modern chandelier (with lights shaped like slivers of fruit) and potted plants. The doors open up onto the garden, where there is a wooden table outside, with room for eight or more. -
Poolside
The outdoor pool has dazzling sea views. You might end up foregoing your boudoir and sleeping under the stars on the wooden deck, which is big enough to fit the entire party (as well as loungers, chairs, plump white cushions and sizable garden furniture). There’s also a sauna and a hot tub. -
Gardens
The property is surrounded by 50 acres of landscaped lawn, verdant fruit trees, and lush tropical forest. -
Private parking
There is plenty of space to park in the grounds.

In the know
Eating and drinking
Veronica, Port House’s personal chef, will whip up delicious meals for you. Many of the ingredients are harvested in the property’s gardens, and the food is a blend of European and Jamaican cuisine. Meals are served up by Port House’s friendly butlers, Norris and Erol, and you can eat in the main dining room, or out on the terrace.
Housekeeping
Rooms are cleaned each morning. In the evening, beds are turned down and the shades and windows closed. A second maid is available, depending on the number of guests staying. The bedrooms have laundry baskets.
Entertainment
Though the bedrooms are TV-free (watch the ocean instead), the entertainment room is tricked out with an Apple TV loaded with films, a DVD player, full cable, stereo and surround sound, plus an iPod dock.
Provided
Thirst-quenching sodas, fresh juices and bottled water, along with essential toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash and mosquito repellent.
Packing tips
Bring your iPod to plug into the dock by the pool and a vintage cocktail dress or sharp suit in a nod to Port House’s glamorous past.
