Getting there

  • Planes Melbourne Airport in Tullamarine, north west of the city, is the main gateway to regional Victoria (www.melair.com.au). Sharp Airlines fly from Essendon Airport in Melbourne to Hamilton in the Grampians, from where you can transfer to Dunkeld (+61 1300 556 694; www.sharpairlines.com.au). If rotor blades are more your bag, Heli Experiences flies direct from Melbourne to Royal Mail Hotel (and Mt Sturgeon) in Dunkeld (+61 413 961 918; www.heliexperiences.com).
  • Trains VLine operates a train and bus service to Dunkeld (www.vline.com.au). The journey from Melbourne's Southern Cross station takes about three and a half hours, with trains connecting with a coach service at Ballarat.
  • Local taxi service Try Taxis of Hamilton, based in nearby town Hamilton, just south west of Dunkeld (+61 (0)3 5571 1200).
  • Automobiles Mt Sturgeon is 260 kilometres west of Melbourne at the southern end of Victoria's Grampians – a three-and-a-half-hour drive. Take the Western Highway to Ballarat and then the Glenelg Highway to Dunkeld: check-in is at the allied Royal Mail Hotel in town (the cottages themselves are three kilometres to the west, off Cavendish Road). If you're coming from the scenic Great Ocean Road, turn inland at Warrnambool on the C178.
