Mt Sturgeon PO Box 50 The Grampians 3294 Victoria AU

Mt Sturgeon

The Grampians, Australia

Best picnic spot

At your very own picnic table in front of your cottage (hampers and barbecue packs can be supplied by the Royal Mail Hotel). If you're feeling more adventurous, head off with a hamper on one of the walks that leave from the property and enjoy a real Australian bush picnic with nothing but the roos for company.

Best beaches

Take your pick from a bunch of scenic coastal spots 45 minutes drive away on the Great Ocean Road, including Port Fairy and Warrnambool.

Best walks

There are eight walking trails on the property varying in difficulty from an easy 15-minute stroll to a three-hour hard slog (or from 800 metres to eight kilometres return). Ask for a detailed walking map at the Royal Mail Hotel reception in nearby Dunkeld.

Shopping

Unless you're after outdoor hiking gear, there isn't much in the way of retail therapy in the Grampians. Dunkeld does have a good rare and second-hand bookshop though, as well as three art galleries nearby; just ask at reception for directions.

Activities

Walking is the number one attraction here, with the Grampians National Park on your doorstep, and eight marked trails of varying lengths all starting within a five-minute drive of the property. Look out for kangaroo, wallabies, emus, echidnas, lizards and falcons on your wanderings. Wildflowers and indigenous flora abound too; there are Native Garden Tours on the first Sunday of each month, or by request. Wine buffs can savour a tour of the Royal Mail Hotel’s famous cellar every Saturday at 4pm, with tastings for AU$15. For tours of regional art galleries, visit the tourist information centre on Parker Street (usually the first weekend of the month); Hamilton Art Gallery is famous for its decorative arts collection, a short drive from Dunkeld. If classical tunes are more your thing, the Australian String Quartet performs every April for the Dunkeld Weekend of Music in the atmospheric Woolshed on the property. Other local distractions include yoga at Griffins Hill retreat, the 18-hole Grampians Golf Club in Dunkeld, horse riding and winery tours across the region.

Smith Tip

Get up at sunrise for the best chance to see the resident roos in the grassy paddock by the cottages.
