Maison de Mons

Provence, France

Best picnic spot

If you want to find somewhere secluded to feast upon the scenery and your gastronomic groceries then we can recommend the perfect spot. Just 6kms from Mons in the Quartier St Jean, there's an old lavoir or wash house, next to which you can sit, sheltered by the shade of a huge plane tree, and unwrap your treats next to a cool, gushing spring. Idyllic.

Best walks

The countryside is hilly in these parts and every direction is stunning – you just have to work out if you'd like to smell some lavender en route or taste the local wines... One lovely walk takes you over the hills to discover the source of the Siagne River.

Shopping

If organic local produce gets your juices going, then wait until you experience the Marche du Paysan in Callian – it's a farmers market that sells fine cheeses, fresh flowers and more vegetables than you can name; the Bio Shop in Montauroux is great for local products made 100 per cent biologically (there's a clue in the name). Or try the Saturday market in St Cezaire where you can buy just about everything from the famous rough-cut cheeses to the crisp rose wine. Last but not least, and if you are not keen to travel, then the few local shops in Mons provide a great, if basic, array of the best the region can offer.

Activities

Within view of Mons (perhaps if you have 20/20 vision and on a very clear day), you can spy the beautiful and crumbling Aqueduct Frejus. The dramatic Gorges du Verdon and the ghostly Fortress Entrevaux are also must-sees. This area which provides any cycling enthusiast, whatever level of expertise, the opportunity to challenge their skills and do it with style (do not forget your stripy top). The owner of Maison de Mons recommends the 90km roundtrip ride up to the Route Napoleon and over to the Col de Bleine (1439 metres) with stunning views down towards the Southern Alps. However, if this all sounds a little bit too much like hard work, then explore the local area on horse back. This is a great alternative picnic spot. Or if you'd like to make some local friends, you can always wander through the village square and involve yourself in a game of petanque – prepare to meet some real characters.
