Felmingham Hall

Norfolk, United Kingdom

Intro

You’re only a half-hour drive from some of the finest sandy beaches on the east coast and the watery wonderland of the Norfolk Broads are only 15 minutes away. Norwich, with its spectacular cathedral is only 20 minutes from Felmingham and the surrounding countryside has some equally magnificent country estates to visit, too.

Best picnic spot

The gardens and park at Blickling Hall in Aylsham are perfect for picnics. The Samphire deli can prepare a hamper for you (www.samphireshop.co.uk). Further afield, Old Hunstanton beach is west facing making it sheltered and ideal for watching the sun go down.

Best beaches

The long sweep of sand at Wells-next-the-Sea is ideal for families. Holkham beach has a wild, windswept drama that’s irresistible even out of season. Brancaster is another family-friendly favourite because of its gentler tide. The beach at Cley-Next-the-Sea is peaceful, year-round.

Best walks

Take a stroll round the beautiful parklands of the area’s country estates. Blickling Hall near Aylsham is open between April and October and has some lovely lakeside strolls (www.nationaltrust.org.uk). Holkham Hall is a splendid Palladian pile surrounded by an extensive deer park (www.holkham.co.uk) or you can visit the Queen’s Norfolk retreat at Sandringham (www.sandringhamestate.co.uk).

Activities

The coastline is great for watersports; try windsurfing and sailing (+44 (0)1485 210 236; www.northshoresport.co.uk) or kite surfing at Brancaster Staithe near Burnham Market (www.kitesurfhub.org). For something a bit more sedate why not hire a fabulous sailing barge for the day (+44 (0)7771 597 985; www.charlieward-trad-boats.co.uk), or go on a seal safari from Blakeney (+44 (0)1263 740 753; www.norfolksealtrips.co.uk). On dry land, you can enjoy pond dipping, mountain biking and rambling at the Holt Country Park, or you can go riding and see the working horses at the West Runton Riding Stables (+44 (0)1263 837 339; www.norfolk-shirehorse-centre.co.uk). There are some excellent golf courses in the area as well, including the challenging links courses at the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club (+44 (0)1485 210 223) and the Hunstanton Golf Club (+44 (0)1485 532 811; www.hunstantongolfclub.com). Children will enjoy the high-wire adventure course in Thetford forest (0870 458 9187; www.goape.co.uk) or the Seal Sanctuary in Hunstanton, which also has penguins and otters (+44 (0)1485 533 576; www.sealsanctuary.co.uk).

Smith Tip

If you drop in to the Saracen’s Head at Wolterton for some food or an afternoon’s supping in the beer garden you’ll find there’s a lovingly run (and affordable) gallery and vintage interiors shop next door called The Shed.
