The games room should be your first port of call on a rainy day. When the weather is clement, however, set off on a bike ride or head for one of the numerous World Heritage-listed National Parks; sheer heaven for bushwalkers. The much-lauded Springbrook National Park is bursting with waterfalls, creeks and wildlife. The Nightcap National Park is 30 kilometres south-east of Murwillumbah and has countless walking tracks and even a scenic drive. This subtropical playground is on the edge of the caldera of the Mount Waring Volcano and is home to many species of animals. Keep your eyes peeled for the small bent-winged bat and the masked owl, which has a heart-shaped ring around its face.
Smith Tip
Take full advantage of your surroundings and explore the rainforest wildlife. Listen out for the scratching claws of the cute, spiny echidnas (mini-me anteaters with snouts Cyrano would approve of) who forage at dawn and dusk for ants.
