Château de Lartigolle

Gers, France

Best picnic spot

Find a quiet spot along the Gers River if you’d like to be near town, within the vast Bois d’Auch to be close to nature, or alternatively take a drive and delve into the breathtaking Pyrenée valleys (see 'walks'). A riverside spot of unfathomable beauty and perfect for an idyllic lunch is the Valley de Rioumajou.

Best beaches

As this is not a coastal region, beaches are probably not what you are here for, but if you are keen to get up early and visit the seaside, then you have two options – the Atlantic coast (we recommend Cap Breton, Hossegor, Biarritz, St Jean de Luz) and the Mediterranean coast (visit the beautiful Narbonne plage), both are within 2.5 hours.

Best walks

Two words for you: the Pyrenées. In winter they’re all about thick white snow, luminous ski suits and goggles, but once the ice has retreated, this vast landscape transforms to vivid green, and walking routes emerge in every direction. Waterways and plunge pools materialise for swimming en route if the sunshine gets too much, and there’s so many villages to pass through for food, drinks and exploration, each with their own personalities and customs. More local routes from the St Jean de Campostelle and Bois d’Auch (with over 380 hectares of woodland) are also not to be missed.

Shopping

There is a market for almost every day of the week in this region with produce ranging from beautifully crafted leather goods to fresh produce – what you don't eat there you'll be squeezing into your suitcase to share at home. It’s a great reason to visit the local villages as Auch (market on Thursdays with stalls offering a bit of everything), Seissan (Fridays, selling flowers, clothes and livestock) and Gimont (Sundays, fois gras and the freshest of fruit and veg) all have something special to offer. Antique fans who are in the region during the first weekend of the month should visit Toulouse for its market on Friday and Saturday.

Activities

The panoramic countryside views may seem sleepy and quiet – but there is much to do here for every one in the family – children have no excuse to be bored for even a moment. Although situated inland there is no shortage of watersports – from dingy sailing, canoeing and fishing (pre-booking necessary) on the local lakes, to white-water rafting in the Pyrenées as well as there being a host of waterparks for those who need an adrenalin rush.

If you’re looking for something slightly more grown-up then take advantage of the Armagnac and vineyard tours and taste your way through the grapes and buy a few bottles to continue your wine education back at the house. A recommendation is the Château Monluc which offers a free tour and tasting, but make sure you book (www.monluc.fr; +33 (0)5 62 28 94 00).

Perhaps underestimated as a tourist destination compared with Paris say, but with lots of must-see potential, Toulouse is just 50 minutes from Château de Lartigolle. There is an abundance of creativity nestled here from the worlds of engineering (namely aerospace), music and of course phenomenal gastronomy. With all these influences, the boutiques that have emerged are also full of imagination – and cover all bases from clothing and shoes to art and antiques.

Smith Tip

Mobiles work in the courtyard and upstairs in the château, downstairs, not so well – the walls are, after all, 75cm thick. You may find this a hindrance or, more likely, a relaxation-guaranteeing blessing! If you loiter in the courtyard though, phone signals are strong.
