Caldera Caves

Santorini, Greece

Reviewed by Mr & Mrs Smith.

These sleek, simple units are as close to the blue and white Santorini idyll as it’s possible to get. Hollowed from the caldera cliffs and perched high above the Aegean, Caldera Caves are a series of rounded buildings built on narrow cobbled lanes in Oia, Santorini’s most popular village. The open-plan Scandinavian design features sharp lines, flashes of colour and high-end finishes, such as the pale green cement floor, dove-grey doors and walls and arches carved from the cliff face.

The chapel-like alcoves and arches add to the ambience by accommodating the cleverly positioned lights and candles – transforming an essentially stark space into somewhere soft and intimate. The front doors have windows and shutters to let the warm natural light stream in all day. It’s minimalist but antique ornaments such as traditional pots remind you that you’re effectively sleeping in a chalky Greek cave.
