Charming guest house in central Cape Town, very comfortable, and friendly staff. Great breakfast and we also liked the afternoon drinks. Views of Table Mountain from our deluxe room, which is really quite special to wake up to. Kloof St nearby has some lovely cafes for brunch/lunch. Melissa's is always good. There is also a bar called Asoka which is fun and walking distance back to Welgelegen. Cape Town is full of amazing restaurants and you can eat amazingly well for relatively little money. Would particularly recommend nearby Opal Lounge. Also Camps Bay for some beachside eating. Paranga and Sandbar both good and Cafe Caprice for drinking. Also love La Perla in Seapoint and Wakame in Mouille Point. We wanted to try the Bungalow but it was sadly fully booked so one for next year's trip. Every time I come to Cape Town my must-do thing is to walk/scramble up Lion's Head. You'll need trainers, sunscreen and some water. The walk up is about 30–60 mins depending on fitness levels and in parts is a bit of a steep scramble up the rocks so you will work quite hard and my Mr Smith moans the next day about having sore glutes and quads. From the top you have views of the whole city: Table Mountain, Camps Bay, the 12 Apostles and city bowl. It is well worth the hard work to get to the top and means you will have worked up an appetite for another delicious meal.

Tino's Portuguese restaurant, five minutes away on Kloof Street in a Victorian house was lovely – great atmosphere, full of locals, and great food too.

A few minutes walk away at the top of Kloof Street is Manna (+27 (0)21 426 2413). A fabulous place for a light tapas-style lunch, leaving room for one of their feather light cupcakes, or pistachio and rosewater meringues with cream and fresh fruit. Only open during the day (till 6pm) but a great choice for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.
