Smith tip
Fowey is the heart of Daphne du Maurier country; she lived a short distance up the estuary next to the ferry landing at Bodinnick. Jamaica Inn, Frenchman’s Creek and Rebecca would all be an appropriate choice for a holiday read as they are so heavily influenced by the surrounding landscape. There’s also a Daphne du Maurier Literary Centre on South Street in Fowey.

Best picnics
There are some wonderfully peaceful woodland spots close to the house. The headlands overlooking Lantic Bay are also ideal on a warm summer day.Best beaches
The house has its own sheltered private beach, perfect for children. Lantic Bay is a wide sweep of sand enclosed by headlands; it can be a bit exposed in blustery weather. Polkerris beach is smaller but more sheltered, with the popular Rashleigh Inn on the waterside.Best walks
There’s a circular walk around the estuary linked by the ferry between Fowey and Polruan. The coastal walks have spectacular scenery, either west to Polkerris beach via Gribben Head, or east from Polruan to Lantic Bay, Pencarrow Head and Lansallos cliffs to Polperro.Shopping
Pencalenick House is fully catered, but if you want to track down some of the excellent local food then there are several places to visit in Fowey. There’s no supermarket (something the locals are rightly proud of). Fishmonger: Fowey Fish on Fore Street (www.foweyfish.com) Butcher: Mr Kittows (www.kittowsmeats.co.uk) Deli: Tiffins (www.tiffinsdeli.co.uk)Activities
Sailing on Pencalenick House’s own yacht is a real highlight and is included in the price. Jasper the skipper and the first mate Pip can take you out to more remote parts of the coast and to secluded beaches and picnic spots. Pencalenick House can organise all kinds of activities including horse riding, tennis and canoeing. Adventure Cornwall offers activities from climbing on Bodmin Moor to coastal kayaking (www.adventurecornwall.co.uk). You can also sail traditional wooden dinghies on the estuary with Fowey River Sailing (www.foweyriversailing.co.uk).
