These back-to-basics hideaways may suggest the simple life, but they boast an impressive line-up of mod cons and  flashes of extravagance

Guestbook

‘It was everything we’d hoped – solitude in a beautiful setting, superb service and lodge, great food (especially the healthy breakfast hamper) and plenty of activities. Just one word to describe the bungalow: perfect!’
‘The rainforest was stunning and totally lived up to our expectations. We appreciated the special touches such as the hot tub, music in all the rooms, fantastic deck, handy climate control and good coffee. We certainly got the chance to relax and unwind in privacy.’

Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat Mr & Mrs Smith 2009-05-20 5

Sunlight filters between the trees and in through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls of the lodges at Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat. At first glance these back-to-basics hideaways may suggest the simple life, but they boast an impressive line-up of mod cons and even flashes of extravagance, such as the two-person spa bath with rainforest views. A state-of-the-art surround-sound music system which pipes your tunes throughout the bungalow is another techie draw; a long hot soak soundtracked by your favourite bathing music is the very height of decadence.

Afterwards, slide open the glass doors leading to the deck and let in the sights and sounds of the rainforest. For timeless mountain views and the freshest air, it’s hard to beat. Meals are taken at the small table inside or, for a more romantic setting, lay the table outdoors on the terrace and barbecue some tasty local seafood. Alternatively, succumb to the lure of tempting restaurants in the region. The best eateries are about 50 minutes’ away; either in Byron Bay or in the lush hinterland so combine fine dining with a day trip.

A number of hammocks dangle over the creek, so clamber in for your midday siesta and drift off to the soporific sounds of the creek. Or for a more stable crash-out, stretch out on the sunbeds on your private deck.

If this all sounds too relaxing to be decent, set off for a bracing hike with your binos – there are legions of dazzling birds populating the sense-assaulting rainforest. There are eight kilometres of walking tracks on the property and a glut of national parks are also right on your doorstep; Mount Warning, Mount Jerusalem and Nightcap national parks are particularly breathtaking.
Any aches afterwards will be put right with a bungalow-based massage or beauty treatment so be sure to factor one in.

At night, grab a torch and seek out some neon glow worms. They live in the murky, muddy banks of the creek and resemble a twinkling, starry sky. If you visit in the spring you’ll be privy to a different kind of light show when the luminous, flashing fireflies are in full effect. The property specialises in surprise romantic dinner set-ups for proposals, anniversaries and special occasions. These can be done in your lodge or under a 400-year-old fig tree in the rainforest by the creek.
All in all, these chic self-catering shacks offer an unbeatable combination of remote setting and ultra-refined comfort.
