Atrium at Greenock Creek

Barossa Valley, Australia[view map]

Style
Rural vernacular spectacular
Setting
Western Barossa’s highest hillside

As you approach the Atrium at Greenock Creek up a sloping driveway, you may wonder if you’re staying in a farmhouse. The architecture is distinctly rural Australian, with a low-hipped wraparound veranda. Up close, though, you realise that this is one sophisticated joint – a lavishly appointed, custom-built, private vineyard residence revolving around a central lightwell (the namesake atrium). With three bedrooms, three bathrooms and a gorgeous open-plan living area and kitchen (housing a state-of-the-art sound system, wall-mounted flatscreen TV and studio glass artworks), you’ll be forgiven for wanting to stay inside and soak it all up. But outside the view betrays the real reason you’re here – the wide, handsome Barossa Valley spreads out below the property in all its heady glory. So get out there and explore – the Atrium’s enticements will be waiting for you when you return.

Need to know

Rates
From AU$1,540 a night, for exclusive use of the property.
Sleeps
One to six.
Ideal for
A couple, three couples travelling together or families.
Minimum hire
Two nights preferred; five-night minimum over Christmas, New Year and Easter holidays. A single-night surcharge applies of AU$220 Sunday–Monday; AU$330 Friday or Saturday. Single-night stays are not available during the aforementioned holidays.
Booking process
Book by phone or email. A 50 per cent deposit is required at the time of booking; the balance plus any pre-booked dining and touring experiences are due 45 days prior to your stay. Upon arrival the house manager will meet you, give you a tour of the house then remain on-call throughout your stay.
Property style
Utilising a sassy palette of chunky limestone blocks, mini-aub corrugated iron cladding, stainless steel and floor-to-ceiling glass, the atrium is a smart, low-slung contender. Borrowing from a rural architectural vernacular, this is classic mod Oz.
Grounds
Staying at the Atrium is more about being inside looking out than parading around the 42-acre grounds; the landscaping is thus a rather minimalist, utilitarian work in progress – we wouldn’t want any trees getting in the way of the killer view.
Also
Non-smoking throughout; pets not allowed.

In the know

Eating and drinking
Adjacent to the kitchen area is a dining table for six and some under-counter stools if you want to sit and annoy whoever's cooking while they work. Alternatively, head outside to the barbecue area. If you’re feeling lazy you can book a chef from the highly-rated Appellation restaurant at the affiliated Louise hotel (five kilometres down Seppeltsfield Road) to come and whip up tasty fare for you and your entourage. Reserve well ahead, or better still consider dinner there. Breakfast provisions are included in the rates, and are re-stocked daily for stays of more than one night, along with bottled water, soft drinks and beer. Guests are welcomed with a bottle of chilled sparking wine, and there’s also your very own ‘Icons’ wine fridge, with some choice tipples including famous Penfolds ‘Grange’ and Henschke ‘Hill of Grace' ('Icons' bottles cost extra). Self-catering grocery supplies can be arranged.
Housekeeping
Daily room servicing.
Entertainment
There’s a 42-inch flatscreen plasma TV wall-mounted above the fireplace, cable channels, a BOSE sound system and DVD, music video and CD libraries. All three bedrooms also have flatscreen TVs.
Provided
Loads of luxe treats: bathrobes, high thread-count linen, travel, wine and design literature, CDs, DVDs, and high-speed wireless and plug-in internet access.
Packing tips
Everything's been thought of here, right down to the rubber duck in the bath, but bring a sunhat and decent sunglasses for those desert-hot South Australian summers when you're out and about.
Eco policy
Rubbish is recycled and greywater is used to irrigate the gardens.
