This hotel is perfect for...

• Romantic breaks • Peace and quiet

What I liked

The hotel itself was very clean and appeared newly re-furbished to a very high standard. The staff were welcoming, friendly and very quick to assist with queries. Our room was spotless and the bed was the most comfortable I have slept in away from home. We loved the secluded garden and used it while the weather held.

What could be better

The food service was quite poor. We arrived in the afternoon and we decided to enjoy our free bottle of bubbly (thank you very much) so we sat in the garden and ordered afternoon tea to go with it. The drinks arrived within minutes but the scone and fruit took a futher 30 minutes to appear. By the time it arrived, we had somehow lost the moment, which was a shame. Next morning we ordered a cooked breakfast which arrived very overcooked with rock-hard bacon. We gave up eating in after that. Number Sixteen gets a very high score on the decor and attentive staff but lets itself down on the food service, which was a surprise.

The moment we turned into Sumner Place after a three-minute walk from South Kensington Tube, Mrs Smith was impressed with the location of the hotel: 'Just how I like my London' she remarked. This impression continued; firstly with the reception we received and then with our room, No1, which had recently been refurbished. Mrs Smith was delighted with the decor and the spacious and well-lit bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had afternoon tea in the conservatory looking out onto the delightful courtyard garden. All in all, highly recommended and to top it all, a bottle of champagne in your room on arrival. Will we be back? You bet.

Hummingbird Bakery is a stone throw's away from this hotel - the red velvet cupcakes are definitely worth the wait.

I have to congratulate Kit Kemp on another wonderful hotel. Number Sixteen has a wonderful ambience and the location is fantastic, literally a five-minute walk from South Kensington tube station. My room was spotlessly clean and quiet, breakfast both continental and cooked was fabulous. Had an amazing meal at the Kensington Roof Gardens (+44 (0)207 368 3993) and Andrew Edmunds (+44 (0)20 7437 5708) restaurant in Soho, can highly recommend the Builders Arms (+44 (0)207 937 6213) at 1 Kensington Court Place, off Cromwell Road, for a buzzy atmosphere.

I had the opportunity to go to Sake no hana (+44 (0)20 7925 8988) in St. James Street, in the Economist Building. The restaurant is very good Japanese food, really well done. Good choice.
