A trip to the Viceroy is pretty impressive in itself but it's well worth venturing away from the hotel. The farmers' markets on Wed, Sat and Sun mornings are worth a visit if only to people-watch. The Urth Caffé just a few blocks away on Main Street serves fantastic organic food – perfect for a nice brunch to set you up for the day.
There's also a great restaurant opposite the hotel called Capo. The restaurant looks nothing special from the outside but they serve fantastic fresh Italian pasta and seafood in a very relaxed, candlelit atmosphere.
Chez Jay on Ocean in Santa Monica (about a two-minute walk from the hotel) is a very unassuming little shack of a bar. We disregarded it at first until we entered. Old-school charm where you can throw your peanut shells on the floor. Apparently a favourite with Al Pacino, Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore. Marilyn and Kennedy used to use this place for secret rendezvous. Great atmosphere and killer cocktails. We also went to Geisha House in Hollywood. Amazing Asian food – the aromatic filet mignon is a must; we talked about it for days afterwards! Packed to the rafters, the bar is also fab with a great vibe.
