Once again, the best stayover ever in London! However, if you want a decent cooked breakfast café-style then use the Stockpot (+44 (0)20 7839 5142) on Panton Street – Italian-owned for 30 years and with great service at honest prices.
The bar in the hotel is great, with fantastic cocktails. Great service from this hotel, which is so central. Pop into the restaurant at the National Gallery; there's a great exhibition on food and art.
We had the most fantastic stay at The Haymarket Hotel and can't wait to return. It has a fab location for shopping, with Rigby and Peller nearby and we loved the hotel pool and bar. We recommend eating out at Asia de Cuba restaurant on St. Martin's Lane. Excellent, delicious food and the best service and advice on menu choices from the staff.
We went to see Zorro the Musical at the Garrick Theatre, a 5 minute walk from the hotel. I was pleasantly surprised on how good this show was using the Gypsy Kings songs through a witty dialogue, great choreography, and interesting stunts. One of the best musicals I have seen in a while.
Well we did try to book a table at Gordon Ramsey's on Royal Hospital Road only to find out that four weeks isn't advanced enough booking for any of his restaurants; despite getting on the cancellation list for Petrus we didn't get the call back. We consoled ourselves to an old faithful Conran restaurant, Coq d'Argent. Whilst the food was excellent the room lacked atmosphere (well, what did I expect being in the deserted financial district on a Saturday night?) even though the other three occupied tables looked to be enjoying themselves.
Then we hit Ronnie Scott's for a late session with our beloved Carleen Anderson. That place hits the spot for an intimate, almost aphrodisiac-like atmosphere with the sharp-dressed jazz brigade. But the prize goes to our Haymarket Hotel for being head and shoulders the highlight of our stay – you know all the adjectives.
The Haymarket Hotel is so chic and relaxing. We stayed in their townhouse which was like staying in your own home but with all the luxury perks of a top hotel and room service. Watched a matinée performance of Madame de Sade starring Dame Judi Dench and Rosamund Pike at the Wyndham Theatre which was superb, followed by a fabulous meal at J Sheekey fish restaurant which is just around the corner. The breakfast at the Haymarket is excellent and the staff are really friendly but the pièce de résistance is the hotel swimming pool – sublime.
Try Lab Bar, 12 Old Compton Street, Soho – a funky setting for fabulous cocktails. Pretty informal, but a great spot to start the evening.
Do not miss the chance to see Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart in 'Waiting for Godot' at the Royal Haymarket theatre next door! Take afternoon tea, late, with your free Smith champagne, then potter round the corner for the show. We did, and it was fantastic. The run is due to end 9 August 2009.
I was initially thinking of going up to the fish restaurant but i am glad we asked for and got the table downstairs at the oyster bar, much more fun and wow would i go back again.
Nearby Jermyn Street is one of the best parts of the west end.
The hotel is incredibly well located for all the art galleries and museums, like the National Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, White Cube and if you fancy a longer stroll, Tate Britain is about a 25-minute walk away.
we went to see the stage production of Oliver which really lived up to the rave reviews we'd heard.
Phantom of the Opera is just opposite the hotel. It's a fantastic production and really conveniently located, so you can hit the hotel bar when it finishes!
I have to congratulate Kit Kemp on another wonderful hotel. Number Sixteen has a wonderful ambience and the location is fantastic, literally a five-minute walk from South Kensington tube station. My room was spotlessly clean and quiet, breakfast both continental and cooked was fabulous. Had an amazing meal at the Kensington Roof Gardens (+44 (0)207 368 3993) and Andrew Edmunds (+44 (0)020 7437 5708) restaurant in Soho, can highly recommend the Builders Arms (+44 (0)207 937 6213) at 1 Kensington Court Place, off Cromwell Road, for a buzzy atmosphere.
