Verana Mr & Mrs Smith 2009-10-15 5

Mr & Mrs Smith have just got back from a review trip to this boutique hotel in Jalisco, and just as soon as they’ve unpacked their tequila and tortilla mix, a full account of their stay in Mexico will be with you. In the meantime, just to whet your wanderlust, here’s a quick snapshot of jungle retreat Verana

You may have to put in a fair bit of effort to get to Verana – the boutique hotel in Jalisco can only be reached via a boat trip from the mainland and a mule ride through the jungle – but, once you’re stretched out in your cotton-draped king-size, looking out at the sparkling ocean, you realise it’s more than worth the trip. The tiny village of Yelapa nearby is the only vestige of civilisation for miles, a world away from the tourist bustle of Puerto Vallarta. Nature rules this roost: frangipani blooms all over the hillside, bougainvillea trails in and around the raw-concrete bedrooms and wrought-iron window frames, and you awake to the sound of birdsong emanating from the surrounding jungle. Some of the hotel’s houses have walls that are all window, looking out over the sea, some don’t bother with walls at all, meaning you can lounge in bed and still get the full David Attenborough experience.

Of course, getting back to nature and pampering yourself silly don’t have to be mutually exclusive – Verana’s jungle spa not only features the usual massage treatments, facials and body scrubs, but also several soaking tubs where you can immerse yourself in essential oils surrounded by flickering candles, and a Watsu pool that lets you experience the unique sensations of weightless massage. Add to that private beaches secluded by rocky outcrops, inspired pared-down architecture, and delicious, freshly prepared food and you’ve found yourself a modern-day Eden.
