With a cliffside perch at the highest point of Santorini’s volcanic caldera, San Nicholas Cave House Villa is a one-of-a-kind escape with access to the Chromata hotel and its prime-placed infinity pool. Inside, it’s a peaceful haven of smooth, arching whitewashed walls and muted pops of colour: think pastel-painted weathered antique furniture, intricately woven Missoni throws and lone orchid flowers leaning in artisan pottery. Outside, there are two terraces with space for up to 30 to join you for dinner, and a sundeck and plunge pool. Beyond that, there’s a view that really has to be seen to be believed (and even then it seems surreal).

First Glance

  • The villa is laid out on two floors, with the master suite, kitchen, living and dining area, and the larger terrace on the lower level.
  • The villa’s design is supremely simple, with natural woods, woven textures and elegant orchids adding a flourish to the light-filled, brilliant-white interiors. In the living room there’s a plump sofa and a fireplace to keep things toasty in winter, and glass-paned doors to the terrace in case you’re missing that view already. The kitchen comes kitted out with all the crockery and crystal you need for in-villa eating and drinking, and don’t forget the butler is only ever a call away.

Villa highlights

  • Clifftop caldera views
  • Unique cavern interior
  • Private plunge pool

Sleeping arrangements

  • The master suite is a spacious den with a low-set queen-size bed, and a spa-style ensuite bathroom tucked under the arched cave ceilings. Soft grey furnishings and natural-wood sculptures keep the colour palette muted and the atmosphere serene.
  • Upstairs, the second bedroom features antique and upcycled furniture in pastel shades of distressed paint, and a wrought-iron queen-size bed. The ensuite bathroom has a walk-in shower, and the room has its own, elevated private terrace.
  • An extra guest can sleep in the smallest of the three bedrooms; the cosy space, with an ensuite bathroom, can be converted into a sitting room if the additional bed isn’t required.

Grounds

  • The villa is on a private plot set apart from Chromata hotel, on the ancient footpath between Thira and Oia.
  • Each level of the two-storey building has a roomy terrace with glorious views across the caldera.
  • There’s a coal-fired barbecue so that the souvlaki is still sizzling when it’s served on the terrace, with space for up to 30 people if you’re planning a party.

Location

  • The villa is part of the Chromata hotel, at the highest point of the caldera between the towns of Thira and Oia.
  • It’s a 25-minute drive from Santorini airport, which has flights to Athens and other major cities in Europe.
  • You can’t park at the villa, but the hotel provides a valet-parking service free of charge.
