Setting

Kifisia casa

You may not have thought of the Greek notion of ‘eudaimonia’ since school, but you can rediscover it at The Twentyone, a leafy residence in the northern Athenian suburb of Kifisia. The Aristotelian idea is all about human flourishing and living well, and guests can wholeheartedly embrace it here, with refreshing swims in the garden, cocktails to help the musings flow and dinners to sermonise.

At the hotel

Free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, air-conditioning, Nespresso coffee machine and free capsules, tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, slippers and The Botanist & The Chemist bath products.

Our favourite rooms

For the most space, book a two-storey Skyview Deluxe Suite — but a compact Premium City View With Balcony will do the trick for your temporary Athenian pièd-a-terre. Though it’s cooler out here than in the city centre, outdoor space will never go amiss.

Poolside

There’s an unheated pool in the garden, open for dips from 11am to 6pm.

Packing tips

Kifisia is famous as the Northern Suburbs’ smartest shopping district, so be sure to leave some suitcase space for your finds.

Also

There’s no gym, but the hotel has a partnership with one nearby called Alterlife, which you can use for an extra cost.

Pet‐friendly

Your four-legged friend is welcome to join you for free, and pups are welcome in all rooms and communal spaces at the hotel. See more pet-friendly hotels in Athens.

Children

All ages are welcome but there are no special facilities for kids.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Indoors on a mushroom-coloured banquette, or living the good life under a parasol out on the terrace.

Dress Code

Bust out some of your new purchases from Kifisia’s most stylish stores.

Hotel restaurant

There are two: Isabella’s and The Twentyone. Breakfasts of pancakes, porridge and chia puddings are served at the former, set in a greenhouse with tables in the garden, before the space sets up for languid lunches. Dinner is at the hotel’s more formal namesake restaurant, where you can enjoy French, Mediterranean and Asian dishes, alongside classics like miso black cod, a selection of prime steak cuts and sole meunière.

Hotel bar

The art nouveau-inspired bar has counter seats for watching the mixologists at work — go for a dirty Martini or a house spritz.

Last orders

Isabella’s opens for breakfast every day from 8am to 11am, and lunch from 12.30pm to 4.30pm. The bar serves drinks from 7pm to 11.30pm.

Room service

In-room breakfasts can be arranged between 7am and 11am, with the room service menu taking over from 12.30pm until 11pm.

Greece

The Twentyone is in Kifisia, a smart northerly neighbourhood on the edge of Athens’ great urban sprawl.

Planes

Athens’ main international airport is around half an hour away by car, depending on traffic. Hotel transfers cost €50 (€65 between midnight at 6.59am).

Trains

You can travel by train between Athens airport and Kifisia, but you’ll have to switch from rail onto the subway at Neratziotissa — from there, it’s a 15-minute drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

There’s plenty to see and do in Kifisia, and when you want to explore the more central parts of Athens, hop on the subway or hail a cab (drive time to the Parthenon is around an hour). If you have brought your own wheels, there’s free limited parking at the hotel, and the team will need prior warning.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Twentyone is in Athens’ north-west suburb of Kifisia, storied for its shopping scene and art galleries — making it the ideal choice for your temporary Athenian postcode. Within walking distance is the Goulandris Natural History Museum, and you can enjoy some more contemporaneous flora and fauna at Kifisia Park. Stroll the district’s sycamore-lined streets admiring the architecture (which includes lots of historic neoclassical mansions) as you go, or people-watch in Kefalari Square after wandering up Kolokotroni Street. If you’re in luck on a Saturday evening, you might even spot a big fat Greek wedding taking place at the church on the square.

Alonia is the oldest part of Kifisia, with overgrown cottages and mansions, typical tavernas and bakeries, and old-fashioned storefronts to explore. There’s a farmers’ market at the top of Agiou Tryfonos Street every Wednesday morning. And as if this neighbourhood couldn’t get any better, it’s also home to two open-air cinemas, ready to enjoy on those balmy Grecian nights — the Boboniera has been open since 1918, and there’s also Chloe, in a gorgeous garden.

Local restaurants

In Politia, a neighbourhood within the suburb of Kifissia, Chalet has an offering for every mealtime, whether you’re in search of a garden for summertime sundowners, a spot for morning coffee or brunch, or a buzzy hang-out before going out out. If you’ve had your fill of mezze and souvlaki (impossible), Monzu is on hand with pizza, pasta and all things Italian instead — there’s a garden for some authentic alfresco dining, too. Likewise, if you’re seeking a little spice, Cash, in a mansion on Diligianni Street, has Asian-influenced plates, sushi and various raw dishes.

Local cafés

Varsos is a classic Greek bakery that’s been a Kifisia institution since 1892 and a popular meeting place for all ages, who convene for coffee, baklava and every sweet treat imaginable. For a more modern approach to brunch try Different Beast, where, naturally, avocado toast and a matcha chai latte is the order of the day.

Local bars

Go inside an old neoclassical building rather than admiring it from the outside and head to Artisanal at the edge of Kifissia, which has a big outdoor space to enjoy your drinks in. If you’re peckish, try the chef’s famous feta bouyourdi, served wrapped in edible foil, or some fresh takes on dolmadakia.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Greece and unpacked their stylish new threads, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Twentyone in Athens…

It’s no secret that Athens is a sprawling city, and it’s not unusual for visitors to pick their suburb and travel in to the centre when they crave it. The obvious choice for many is Glyfada or Vouliagmeni in the revered Athenian Riviera; but for something inland, go north to Kifisia, where The Twentyone makes an idyllic base for exploring this lesser-known district and beyond.

The hotel has taken the Ancient Greek concept of living well as its starting point, creating a serene antidote to Athens’ bustle in its secluded garden and swimming pool. Kifisia has lots of dining establishments, cafés and cocktail bars to discover, but there are two raved-about restaurants at the hotel if you don’t fancy venturing far. Rooms are stylish and comfortable, some with balconies for watching the well-heeled world go by below. Athens proper is just a subway or cab ride away — and once you’ve dipped into the centre, you’ll be grateful for this harmonious hideaway to return home to.
