La vie en rosé

Setting

Lake Huron hangout

Bygone summers are the blueprint at The June Motel Sauble Beach, a restored Seventies stay that’s five minutes from Lake Huron’s white-sand shores. Retro-accented rooms sport blush palettes and hammock-strung balconies, and rosé flows under pastel-striped parasols by the pool. A New England-inspired seafood restaurant and nightly s’mores round the fire pits further ramp up the nostalgia, with welcome contemporary additions in yoga sessions and Ontarian wines. Here, the good old days have received a glow-up.

Unfortunately, due to its Seventies architecture, The June Motel Sauble Beach is not suitable for guests with limited mobility.

Hotel closed

The hotel opens annually from early May to mid-October. It's closed Monday to Wednesday, from 21 September to 11 October; Sunday to Thursday, the first week of May; and Monday to Wednesday, 18 to 27 May.

At the hotel

Games lawn, fire pits, gift shop and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, Crosley Bluetooth speaker, air-conditioning, tea- and coffee-making kit, mini fridge, refillable water bottle, and Sunday’s Company and Carina Organics bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Every room delivers plenty of retro, surf-y character, plus a private patio or balcony. Double Rooms, with their two queen-size beds, will work best for friends and families.

Poolside

At The June’s heated outdoor pool, which is open from 8am to 8pm, days pass as chilled as the (copious) rosé. Stay put on your sunlounger, shaded by a pretty parasol and having buttery lobster rolls brought out whenever you fancy, or snag a pool ring and get in some serious cloud-watching. Kids are welcome, too, as long as they’re supervised by an adult and match the pool’s mellow vibe.

Packing tips

Pick your Seventies style icon and pack accordingly — Stevie Nicks-esque bell sleeves will turn heads as you twirl to poolside tunes, but a Jane Birkin basket would be just the thing for carrying about a bottle of rosé.

Also

For souvenirs with a side of sisterhood, check out the lobby gift shop, stocked with pieces from founders April and Sarah’s favorite female-owned businesses.

Children

All ages are welcome. Double Rooms have two queen-size beds, and cribs and pack’n’plays can be added to rooms on request.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Commandeer a high table out on Heydays’ patio for maximum sun-soaking. On cool evenings, slip inside to find a spot by the fireplace.

Dress Code

Throw colorful crochet and cool, second-hand pieces over your bikini to keep the retro inspiration going.

Hotel restaurant

Take a Connecticut seafood shack, stir in a dash of SoCal coolness, and you have Heydays, the June Motel’s crowd-drawing restaurant. Funky murals and original wood paneling call back to the hotel’s sun-kissed Seventies past in the dining room, which spills out onto a poolside patio. The butter-poached Atlantic lobster roll is a rite of passage, but make sure to have oyster hour in your calendar, too, when East Coast shucks are paired with lashings of local wine.

Hotel bar

The Lobby Bar has you covered from morning coffee to mellow nightcap. There’s rosé for days — just look at that wine fridge by the check-in desk — but also old-school cocktails and craft beer, plus olives and truffle crisps for when a sophisticated nibble is the vibe (and s'mores around the fire pit for when it’s not).

Last orders

Breakfast is between 8am and 10am; lunch is served at Heydays from noon to 4pm, and dinner from 4pm to 9pm. The Lobby Bar is open from 8am to 10pm (11pm in summer).

The June Motel Sauble Beach in the heart of its namesake Ontario beach town, a five-minute walk from the white-sand shore of Lake Huron.

Planes

The hotel is less than three hours’ drive from Toronto Pearson International Airport.

Automobiles

Sauble Beach is charmingly walkable, but you'll want a car for day trips around the Bruce Peninsula. There’s a free carpark at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

On Saturday mornings, set your alarm for guided beach or poolside yoga; then wend your way back to the motel for live music between 6pm and 9pm (on Wednesdays, too). Saugeen Beach is a priority here: pose for the obligatory photo under the Sauble Beach sign, then spend the day sprawled on pale sands and swimming in Lake Huron's gentle waves, staying to catch the famed sunset. For your outdoorsy fix, head out of town to Sauble Falls Provincial Park, where you can paddle as you watch the mini waterfalls or, if you’re more adventurously inclined, rent a canoe or kayak to take out onto the Sauble River. For serious hiking, strike out further afield to Bruce Peninsula National Park, where rugged trails chart dramatic cliffs and ancient, bear-inhabited forest.

Local restaurants

A fried chicken sandwich, beer and spectacular Lake Huron sunset are the classic trio out on the beach patio at Sola’s Grill. Gigi’s Italian serves stone-fired pizzas and comforting bowls of pasta in the center of town. At Casero Taco Bus, watch through the window of the vintage double decker as your homemade tacos are assembled, then take them down to the beach or tuck in immediately out on the patio.

Local cafés

For your caffeine fix en route to the beach, swing by Amicis, where they serve organic, fair trade coffee in a cute cottage, steps from the sand. If you’ve explored the motel’s wine list a little too thoroughly, the Wellness Refinery will revive you with its smoothie bowls, health-focused specialty coffees and nourishing menu.

Local bars

The Dunes, a Western-inspired restaurant and bar in the heart of town, is the place to go for a late-night knees-up — come prepared to get your yeehaw on, as the live music is sometimes accompanied by line dancing. Tobermory Brewing Company is the spot for a crisp, craft beer after a day’s hiking around the Bruce Peninsula.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this color-drenched hotel in Ontario and unpacked their bottles of rosé and blush-pink baseball caps a full account of their retro break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The June Motel Sauble Beach…

The benefit of a stay run by longstanding best friends like April and Sarah, founders of The June Motel Sauble Beach, is that they know what makes a universally good hang. Naturally, the scene is set for a winning girls’ trip: bikinis on, bumping tunes from your Crosley speaker, before oysters and rosé by the pool. But the motel’s throwback sense of fun works just as well for families or a flirty couple’s getaway. There's no age limit to bobbing about in the water, nor enjoying a butter-down-your-chin lobster roll. Equally, playing cornhole can be a hot date — hello, competitive frisson — and if your significant other counts themself too old for campfire s’mores, frankly, something’s amiss. For grown-up romance, though, you can always rely on the lobby bar, with its fine Ontarian wines. Sorry to your current bestie — you and The June are about to be joined at the hip.
