Setting

Chi-town’s wild side

From Miami Beach to Mitte in Berlin, Soho House has a knack for creating inviting homes-from-home in desirable neighborhoods – and boutique hotel Soho House Chicago in once-gritty Fulton Market District is no exception. However, the sprawling proportions of this former belt manufacturing warehouse and tannery does make it rather exceptional. On top of vintage interiors, place-to-be club lounges, a choice of restaurants and bars, plus an all-season rooftop pool and stellar health club reinforce the hotel’s status as a Windy City standout.

Please note, if you are not a Soho House member, you have the option to add a 12-month Soho Friends membership to your booking for $130. This membership covers one room a stay for the member and any additional rooms booked for their children under 18. Public rates are also available.

At the hotel

Spa, barbershop, gym, boxing ring, fitness studios, table tennis, roof terrace, events spaces, screening room, free WiFi. In rooms: flatscreen TV, Roberts radio, Marshall Bluetooth speaker, minibar and cocktail station, free tea, coffee and biscuits, Cowshed and Soho Skin products.

Our favourite rooms

Soho House always spells out the footprint in room titles from Tiny to Big; Small rooms in Chicago are our pick thanks to their relatively generous size at 28 square metres. The bigger you go, the further back in time your room’s decor will date from – Tiny rooms have a moody hued Sixties feel while Medium and Big rooms channel turn-of-the-century velvet and veneer-clad furniture. The leap from Medium to Medium Plus is mostly about the addition of a bath tub in your ensuite.

Poolside

Set on the rooftop with prime skyline views over West Loop, the 20-meter-long heated outdoor pool flanked with sunloungers is open year-round.

Spa

The signature Cowshed Spa has five treatment rooms and a full menu of facials, body treatments and waxing services. There's a proper barbershop for the gents, too.

Packing tips

Hairdryers, hair straighteners and bathrobes are all provided, so you can leave extra space in your cases for all those boutique buys and Cowshed goodies you'll be bringing home.

Also

There are lifts throughout the building and several rooms are adapted to accommodate mobility-impaired guests.

Pet‐friendly

Only service animals with valid documents are allowed at this clubhouse in the city. See more pet-friendly hotels in Chicago.

Children

Welcome, although the atmosphere is adults only, with time restrictions around when little Smiths can be in the Club or pool. Talk to a Smith travel team specialist about adding an extra bed or cot to your room.

Sustainability efforts

It’s reassuring to know that Soho House are working to deliver an environmental impact strategy across their sites. With 2030 goals set to enhance and standardise recycling programmes and responsible food-waste management at every outpost of the member’s club globally. They also work with local suppliers selected for their like-minded responsibility. In the kitchen, there’s scrutiny around how Soho House sources coffee, cocoa and palm oil, as well as sustainable seafood and responsibly reared meat. Expect greater choice of meat-free dishes and seasonal ingredients whenever practical. Measures to assess Soho House’s carbon footprint and reduce emissions are ongoing.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Weather permitting, nab one of the striped sun loungers on the roof deck for drinks and nibbles with jaw-dropping views over West Loop.

Dress Code

Much like the attitude of the locals, fashion is also approachable and slightly more relaxed in this big city, so your favourite pair of designer jeans will be your go-to.

Hotel restaurant

In a cosy indoor dining room on the club floor, House Kitchen offers an all-day menu inspired by Chicago-Italian and deli-style cuisine: dirty burgers, caesar salad, mac ’n’ cheese – this is comfort food par excellence that begins with breakfast grills and ends with penne à la vodka, sweet potato curry or brick chicken. Soho House regular Cecconi’s Roof Bar serves modern Italian plates ranging from cicchetti to wood-fired pizzas and oven-roasted mains including sea bass and eggplant parmigiana via carpaccio and burrata-topped salads. Giant chandeliers bring grandeur to airy, brick-walled Allis Bar on the ground floor, where you can order pizzette, croquettes and truffle fries alongside heartier mains including burgers, lobster rolls and halloumi-cauliflower pitas.

Hotel bar

Classic cocktails such as frosés, old fashioneds, martinis and negronis are served in a high-ceilinged industrial space softened with chandeliers, lounge chairs and sofas at ground-floor Allis Bar. British pub-inspired Fox Bar has beer on tap, craft cocktails and DJ sets.

Last orders

House Kitchen’s hours are 7am until 11pm (closing times vary). Cecconi’s is open 5pm–11pm, Tuesday–Saturday.

Room service

An abridged menu of salads, pizzas and small snacks from the House Kitchen is available from 8am until 10.30pm daily.

Worth getting out of bed for

For a dose of green anytime of year, head three blocks west to the historic Garfield Park Conservatory, one of the country's largest gardens under glass. Wander through the two grand exhibition halls and the six greenhouses shaped to mimic Midwestern haystacks and explore flora from habitats around the world. If a Saturday (or you've phoned ahead for an appointment), continue west of the conservatory to the intimate and carefully curated gallery space of Devening Projects, featuring contemporary and avant-garde artists.

Travel two miles east to Millennium Park, especially famous for Anish Kapoor’s shiny, bean-shaped Cloud Gate sculpture, and join Chicagoans on the lawn for movies and concerts at the Frank Gehry-designed Jay Pritzker Pavilion in the summer and fall. From the park, take the dramatic walkway across the street to the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing, designed by another high-profile architect, Renzo Piano, and continue on to the Institute's main museum for a day surrounded by some of the world's most notable works of art.

Architecture enthusiasts won't want to miss out on the fascinating docent-led Architecture Foundation River Cruise tours of this town that gave birth to the first skyscraper.  Held April to November, take a scenic (snd neck-craning) boat ride down the Chicago River where you'll get the scoop on the design and architecture of the city’s handsome skyline.

Local restaurants

Randolph Street in West Loop is on your doorstep and better known as Restaurant Row. One of the first on the strip was Paul Kahan's Avec, which mixes Middle Eastern with Midwestern cuisine, showcasing North American produce in dishes such as Persian rice pilaf with coal-roasted lamb shoulder and wild Mexican prawns with rose petal shatta. You’ll find a fine choice of meat-free plates and lesser-spotted cuts at Stephanie Izard’s Girl and the Goat pimped with bold Asian flavours: plates such as roasted beets with yuzu kosho, pan-fried shishito peppers, goat empañadas and sticky glazed pork shank explain this Randolph Street institution’s longstanding success. Anyone who reveres the power of the pig, should not miss out on The Publican on Fulton Street: hearty micro-brewed beer and beautiful, briny oysters accompany this menu heavy with pork every way from succulent pork belly to paper-thin slices of aged ham.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Soho House Chicago…

Former meat-packing district Fulton Market has had a 21st-century renaissance as a neighborhood in West Loop best known for its luxurious apartment blocks and glut of gastronomic restaurants and bars. Standing tall amidst the hedonistic hubbub is Soho House Chicago – an outpost of the international members’ club installed in a former belt manufacturing warehouse and tannery from 1907. The warehouse’s legacy is evident in high-ceilinged lounge spaces, over-sized windows, bare-brick walls and generously proportioned rooms; there’s space for a cabaret-style screening room (tub chairs and table-top lamps), a drawing room where daytime workstations transform into ping-pong tables after hours, and a sprawling club lounge that’s home to all-day restaurant House Kitchen. Crowning it all is the rooftop pool and terrace – a sociable space where you’ll want to waft outdoors with your negroni on summer nights and take in the twinkling lights of West Loop and beyond.
