The Mexican war of independence started up the road in Dolores Hidalgo, which is where revolutionary spirit and sovereignty super-fan Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was born – brush up on your knowledge by bringing a history book or two.

Sustainability efforts
The group has set up the Habitas Rise initiative to support local communities, cultures and conservation efforts, creating jobs and offering education for people living near its hotels. A contribution to the fund is made on behalf of guests at check-in and the opportunity to do good continues from there (you’ll be able to do some volunteer work, or make further donations) – with the friendship bracelet given on arrival reminding guests of their ‘collective responsibility and commitment to each other’. The hotel is paperless, too – all the information you need is located on a QR-code-bearing wooden block in your room.
There are purposefully no tables for two, so polish off your oratory skills and get your best anecdotes ready.
Dress Code
It might get a little chilly at night, but the fire pits (and a light jacket) are your friend.
Hotel restaurant
The aptly named Comunidad is a sociable spot where you can play with some vintage spinning tops over pre-dinner drinks, get to know your fellow guests, eat some wood-fired food (specials include suckling pig) and enjoy weekly live music. On the menu are ceviches, sopes and shish kebabs, along with grilled freshly caught fish and, of course, tacos. The chef has a handy garden right beside his grill, ready for garnish-plucking. Breakfast might be burrata and avocado on toast, organic eggs served with focaccia and your choice of smoothies.
Hotel bar
Tequila – it makes you happy, as does mezcal, both of which feature heavily in the creative concoctions mixed up at the bar and served wherever you want them throughout the grounds.
Last orders
Comunidad serves a relaxed, all-day menu with no strict timings. Drinks are available at the bar until 11pm.
Room service
Tea and coffee can be delivered to your cabin, but room service is avoided in order to keep the raccoons at bay.
Our Habitas San Miguel de Allende isn’t actually in central Mexico’s most famous Spanish city, but is just outside.
Planes
Visitors to San Miguel are spoiled for choice when it comes to airports within a reasonable distance of the city – nearest are Leon and Queretaro (both around a 90-minute drive away; hotel transfers from either start at US$125), but it’s also an option to stay on land after touching down in Mexico City and continue your journey by road. Drive time from the capital is around four hours.
Automobiles
A free taxi service shuttles guests back and forth between the centre of town and the hotel, and wherever they want to go (within reason). There’s free parking if you’re self-driving, too.
Worth getting out of bed for
The centre of San Miguel de Allende should be your first port of call during a stay at Our Habitas San Miguel de Allende and handy free taxis are ready to drop you off on a cobblestoned street in town. The pastel-pink confection of a cathedral (officially the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel) is the colonial city’s star attraction, but just strolling the colorful streets is a pleasing pastime of its own. In the scenic surroundings, you can take to the mountains on an ATV, go horse-riding or head up in a hot-air balloon. San Miguel is surrounded by hot springs and there are vineyards to visit nearby, too. Just north of the city on the road to Dolores Hidalgo is a rather impressive church, namely the Sanctuary of Atotonilco. As well as the Pueblo Mágicos of Comonfort and Dolores Hidalgo, there are more Unesco-protected cities within an hour or so’s drive, such as Querétaro and state capital Guanajuato.
Local restaurants
San Miguel has a reputation as a gastronomic haven and one of the places helping to put it on the map is the Restaurant; what it lacks in creative christening, it makes up for in its delicious dishes (shrimp cakes with avocado, tuna poke, locally made burrata with roasted figs and basil oil). As the name suggests, carnivores are well catered for at Bovine around the corner from the cathedral, which serves some of the best steaks in town.
Local cafés
Anthony Bourdain was a fan of the food at Raíces and so is everybody else – you may have to queue but the supersize tortas, breakfast enchiladas and loaded pancakes will be worth the wait. Or keep an eye out for a branch of the Panio bakery for viennoiserie on the go.
Local bars
If you want to get up close and personal with the pinky pinnacles of the Parroquia church, there’s no better spot in town than La Azotea rooftop on Calle Umarán – but you’ll also be able to spy them at sundown from the Luna terrace at Rosewood San Miguel and up on the Antonia rooftop.

They’re not saying your aura is dirty, but they’ll cleanse it anyway on arrival at Our Habitas San Miguel de Allende, just outside of the cobblestoned colonial city. They’ll also burn some copal, encourage you to set intentions for your stay and take you back to primary school by giving you a friendship bracelet. And at this point, the fun’s only just getting started. As with other Our Habitas Homes across the globe, from Tulum to Namibia, there’s something to help you unleash your inner child (in case the friendship bracelets weren’t enough) – in this edition, it’s a swing to fly through the sky (/pose for Instagram) on. There are no televisions in the cabins, so that guests are encouraged to connect with both nature and other humans – the staff like to think that strangers become friends and friends become family. Once you’re on first-name terms, you can join the storytelling circle and share tales over some hot cacao and toasted marshmallows, knock back some mezcal around the fire pits or settle in for a screening under the stars. The merrymaking doesn’t even stop there – there’s also a free activity program to keep you busy during the day, with yoga, meditation and lessons in salsa (edible, not the dance).
