At the hotel

Yoga deck, spa, 24-hour gym, free valet parking, free WiFi, shuttle service, welcome drink, activities concierge. In rooms: Smart TV with streaming platforms, free WiFi, pool towels, mosquito netting, robes, pyjamas and slippers, minibar with local snacks, tea-making kit, Nespresso machine with free pods, air-conditioning, eco-friendly toiletries.

Our favourite rooms

With its infinity-edge pool overlooking paddy field panoramas, you can’t deny the Deluxe Pool Villa is an absolute stunner. For something a little less spendy, we loved the slightly more modest Deluxe Suite, featuring a terrace hot tub, secluded setting and cosy mezzanine lounge.

Poolside

The hotel provides a pair of pools: one a swish 24-metre overflow-edge variety; the other a meandering ‘jungle river’ pool lined with boulders and palm trees. Both offer plenty of poolside lounging options, the former sits alongside the Kelapa restaurant and the other has a small cocktail shack.

Spa

As if gazing over the rippling rice fields wasn’t relaxing enough, the hotel’s OmTara Spa will help you reach blissed-out levels of serenity. It covers 1,000 square metres and comprises seven treatment rooms, sauna, hammam, vichy shower and several vitality pools. Top-notch treatments are backed up by Clarins products and extracts from more than 200 plants and essential oils, some grown in the hotel's own permaculture. Post-treatment you can get back to your gazing in the spa’s panoramic relaxation lounge.

Packing tips

Long limb-covering clothing is not only de rigueur if you’re visiting temples, they double as a useful deterrent for those pesky mozzies.

Also

Any of the spa’s long list of massage treatments can be arranged in-room for couples.

Children

Little Smiths are easily accommodated with sofa beds in most rooms and cots arranged free of charge. There’s a pick of especially tailored activities for the wee ones too, together with a small farm with rabbits, pigs and chickens.

Sustainability efforts

An eco-forward philosophy is woven into everything they do here. This includes zero single-use plastics, thermodynamic water heaters, solar panels and a strict recycling policy. Half of all its homegrown produce is also shared with local villagers.

Food and Drink

Top Table

A corner-of-the-terrace table at Kokokan will give you the full benefit of the gentle breeze wafting off the rice fields.

Dress Code

Go local with your evening dress and pair a colourful kebaya with a kamben, Bali’s answer to a sarong.

Hotel restaurant

Dubbed ‘Epicurean Nests’, the resort offers an impressive selection of feeding stations to peck from. The main restaurant is Kepah, an all-day eatery that starts the day with a generous buffet breakfast, with lunch and dinner buffets inspired by cooking from the Majapahit Empire. A sunny open-air terrace provides spectacular views over paddy fields from Kokokan, the resort’s more refined restaurant. Here the menu is a mix of Indonesian and Western food, though their fiery beef rendang sits among the most outstanding dishes. For more casual poolside fare, chilled-out Kelapa serves up holiday belly-fillers like pizza and burgers during the day, to segue into lighter Mediterranean fare come evening. Much of the fruit, vegetables and spices grown in the hotel’s permaculture garden find their way into the kitchens.

Hotel bar

Drinks can be served wherever you choose to plonk yourself, but the elevated Bale Gourmet lounge is the place for daytime coffee-and-croissants and sunset wines-and-cheeses. For colourful poolside cocktails, cross the bridge to Lianas Jungle Bar overlooking the River Jungle Pool.

Address
Kappa Senses Ubud
Banjar Tanggayuda Jl. Taman Sari Kedewatan Kecamatan Ubud
Kabupaten Gianyar

Indonesia

Kappa Senses is located just on the outskirts of Ubud, Bali’s cultural capital set in the centre of the island.

Planes

Ngurah Rai International airport is an hour and a half away by road. You can arrange an airport transfer through the hotel for around US$50, which is best booked at least a day in advance.

Automobiles

For those planning on exploring the island, a small four-wheel drive is a good choice for Bali’s rougher backroads of Bali. You’ll find most car hire agencies in the Kuta district of Denpasar.

Other

If you’re island hopping, you can jump on the boat to and from neighbouring Lombok via the Padang Bai ferry terminal, which is just under an hour and a half by car.

Worth getting out of bed for

Of course you could happily spend your days lazing poolside, but a stay at the Kappa Sense offers a raft of activity opportunities you’d be silly to squander. Most are intimately connected to the surroundings and local traditions, such as an exploration of the paddy fields’ irrigation systems or taking part in a sacred Balinese ritual in a nearby temple. Get a peek into the rhythms of daily village life before enjoying the alleged health benefits of the local palm wine, there’s always something to drag you away from your sun lounger. And if you’d rather go it alone the hotel puts on regular shuttles to Ubud so you can explore Bali’s cultural capital at your leisure.

Local restaurants

Don’t let the name put you off, Naughty Nuri's Warung cooks up some of the best barbecue in town. Rub shoulders with hungry residents to chow down on sticky melt-in-the-mouth pork ribs at this budget-friendly eatery on Jalan Raya Sanggingan. For a little more sophisticated fare, Akar Restaurant offers fine-dining Indonesian-style. Hop in a buggy at the entrance and you get whisked to a vast jungle-hut deluxe. Spendy but worth the splurge.

Local bars

Travellers don’t tend to visit Ubud for the nightlife, though there are still plenty of spots where you can let your hair down. One popular haunt is the Laughing Buddha Bar thanks to its regular live music, generous happy hours and all-round good-feel vibes. Also on Monkey Forest main drag is No Más Bar with its lively upstairs drinkery that draws as many regular locals as backpacking blow-ins. A mix of rock, salsa and hip-hop keeps the party going, as do the daily 2-4-1 drinks offers.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this hotel in Bali and unpacked their barong mask and gourmet coffee beans, a full account of their tropical island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Kappa Senses in Ubud…

So neatly integrated into its emerald rice field and lush jungle surroundings, it’s easy to imagine Kappa Senses Ubud parachuted fully formed into the middle of lush Bali countryside. Water-bubbling lotus leaf fountains and Sanskrit-inspired decor add to the Zen-like calm that pervades every corner of this two-hectare resort. Start your day with sunrise yoga under a palm-weave palapa, morning mist rising dream-like from the landscape. From fiery spice tasting to temple rituals, dip your toe into the tastes and traditions of rural life with a choice of on- and off-site experiences. If lounging is all you have energy for, nab one of the bamboo daybeds lining the pool like huge mouths yawning over the water. From micro-greens to edible flowers, much of what ends up on your plate is grown in the hotel’s permaculture, which blends farming with the surrounding ecosystem. Even many of the spa’s 200-odd plant extracts are grown within its gardens. If it all sounds rather magical, well, that’s because it is.
