Setting

The Land of nod

Setting your OOO email hits especially hard at Fidelity Hotel, a historic office building turned bloom-filled boutique stay in Cleveland. In rooms and suites, the finance bros have been banished in favor of wildflower hues, happily mismatched prints and artwork by local talent. Mid-downtown, you’re all set to explore Lake Erie and the city’s cultural big hitters. But circle back by close of play for a gimlet and a gruyère-blanketed burger at the restaurant. Talk about workplace perks…

Need to know

Rooms

97, including three suites.

Check–Out

11am. Check-in is at 4pm, but both are flexible, subject to availability.

More details

Rates include breakfast, with classic American options including pancakes, oatmeal and locally sourced eggs benny.

Also

Five rooms — three King rooms, a Double Queen and a Petite Suite, have been adapted for guests with limited mobility. These rooms have grab bars and roll-in showers with seats. There’s elevator access to every floor, and there are ramps to all communal spaces.

At the hotel

24-hour fitness centre, gift shop, paid laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, climate control, steamer, coffee- and tea-making kit, minibar, bathrobes and Allegrini bath products.

Our favourite rooms

In every room, you’ll find curated pieces from the hotel’s art collection and thoughtfully chosen treats from local makers. It’s arguable, though, that Malley’s chocolates are best enjoyed soaking in the Superior Queen room’s clawfoot bath tub. The Fidelity Suite has acres of space, and a suitably palatial shower.

Packing tips

Bring footwear for every adventure in The Land: Salomons for a forest hike, slingback heels for hitting the East 4th Street bars.

Also

Fidelity has banished corporate drabness, despite its past as an office block. The only clue to the building’s buttoned-up past: the original mail chute, which has been carefully preserved in the lobby.

Pet‐friendly

Four-legged pals are welcome in all rooms for free; you'll need to bring Fido's bed and bowls with you. See more pet-friendly hotels in Cleveland.

Children

All ages are welcome, but little Smiths are not especially catered to.

Sustainability efforts

Fidelity Hotel is making itself a force for good in the Cleveland community, forging ties with local artists, suppliers and charities. The hotel doesn’t use plastic water bottles, and all food waste is composted, too.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Just off the main lounge in the Snug dining room, where the handpainted wildflower mural is dotted with hidden nods to Cleveland — full marks if you can find the city’s famous Free Stamp.

Dress Code

Lean in with a whole lotta florals.

Hotel restaurant

Set in an airy space brightened by handpainted murals and curated local art, The Club Room has cemented its place among in-the-know locals as the spot for an intimate downtown dinner. Regional produce is spun into elevated American classics and European-inspired dishes; the burger with gruyère and sauce gribiche is a perennial hit, but the roasted tomato gnocchi with lobster, guanciale and asparagus is a head-turner. Breakfast at The Club Room is equally wholesome, with options like cinnamon apple pancakes, gravlax on toast or locally sourced eggs benny.

Hotel bar

Sit up at the Club Room’s marble bar to watch the mixologists in action. Signature drinks change as inspiration strikes them, but we’ll vouch for the vodka gimlet.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7am to 11am, dinner from 4pm to 10pm. The bar pours during restaurant hours on weekdays, and until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

You’ll find Fidelity Hotel on East 6th Street in downtown Cleveland, near the city’s cultural big-hitters and the shore of Lake Erie.

Planes

It’s around a 20-minute drive from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport.

Trains

The hotel’s a five-minute drive from Cleveland Lakefront Station. Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited service between New York and Chicago, and the Floridian service between Chicago and Miami, both stop there.

Automobiles

Fidelity doesn’t have a private car park, but there’s plenty of garage and street parking nearby, and the hotel has a valet parking service.

Worth getting out of bed for

Music fans can track down their favorite artists (or decry their absence) at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, then check out the genre-spanning exhibitions. If your tastes lean more classical than Clapton, catch a performance by the much lauded Cleveland Orchestra at the Severance Music Center. The city’s theater district, Playhouse Square, is within walking distance of the hotel. And while you’re feeling cultured, head out for a nose around Cleveland Museum of Art, a short drive away.

Take your most capacious tote to the historic West Side Market. Under the grand vaulted ceiling, you’ll find dozens of family-run stalls, from delis and cheesemongers to bakeries repping cultures from all corners of the globe.

This close to the shore, the lure of Lake Erie will get you before long. Down where the Cuyahoga River meets the lake, there are plenty of spots offering watersports and lake cruises — hotel staff can point you to their go-tos. Or head a little further along the shoreline to sandy Edgewater Beach for a swim. And for a further dose of nature, strike out to Cuyahoga Valley National Park to hike or cycle through ancient forest, spotting wildflowers and waterfalls as you go.

Local restaurants

A few minutes’ walk from the hotel, pedestrianized East 4th Street is where to head for a festoon-lit evening out. Sidestep the sports bars in favor of Goma, where chef Dante masterminds a deftly spun sushi menu. The margaritas and carne asada might catch your eye at Blue Agave, but the traditional, achiote-braised street tacos are the true stars here.

Over in the Ohio City neighborhood, Citizen Pie has earned a stellar rep for its wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pizzas thanks to owner V’s meticulous commitment to the conditions, kindling and ingredients needed (and kneaded) to form the perfect dough.

Local cafés

A short stroll away, Lekko Coffee is a feelgood artisan spot where they make certain that everyone in the coffee-making process — from bean to brew — is paid a living wage.

Local bars

Signature cocktails at The Society Lounge range from subtle whiskey flips to Wonka-esque confections, but we’re sold on a simple gin and juice with seasonal homemade jam. Market Avenue Wine Bar’s mellow atmosphere and moreish small plates are worth the short drive.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this colorful city hotel in Ohio and unpacked their playbills and Browns jerseys, a full account of their Midwest break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Fidelity Hotel in Cleveland…

Don’t get the wrong idea if you hear that the Browns are a big deal around here — at Fidelity Hotel, color is majorly in. This historic high-rise in Cleveland has been given a modern glow-up, rooms and suites made over with rich floral wallpaper, flashes of gold and retro furniture in happy-making hues. Peek past the Farrow and Ball palette, though, and everything at Fidelity is colored by the city it calls home.

In the middle of downtown, you’re a skip from some of Cleveland’s headline spots — the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the shore of Lake Erie and the Browns’ stadium, for starters. But the hotel turns the spotlight on the unsung lifeblood of the city, repping homegrown artists on the walls, local makers in the minibar, and regional ingredients on the Club Room restaurant’s menu. Fidelity Hotel wears its Cleveland colors with pride, and after a stay here, you will too.
