Setting

Slopeside 1850

Ski-in, ski-out Bourbon Hotel has thrown out the Alpine rulebook, bringing a decidedly sophisticated streak to Courchevel 1850. Smartly appointed, amber-hued interiors, refined Italian dining and a vinyl-soundtracked lounge bar eschew ski-lodge cliché for a shot of urban poise. And yet, to the gratification of discerning mountaingoers, a prime piste-side location and bijou spa and pool are still on the list.

Top Table

Silken upholstery, an abundance of wall-side benches and candelit tables mean there are no dud spots at Simonetta: find your favourite and settle in.

Dress Code

Mountain labels fit the restaurant’s upscale outdoorsy ambience by day; for evening, the cosiness of the dining room allows you to prioritise glamour over warmth.

Hotel restaurant

Chef Simone Zanoni came to prominence working for Gordon Ramsay in London; has established himself at starred eatery Le George in Paris, and now brings his passion for his native cuisine to the Alps at Simonetta. In an on-point bourbon-coloured dining room, feast on hearty Italian classics from polished pasta to perfectly prepped prime cuts and finessed desserts. Breakfast, also served here, is a more casual buffet affair.

Hotel bar

There's a laidback analogue charm to Bourbon’s lounge-bar, where the set list is strictly vinyl, cocktails complement Simonetta's Italian leanings, the fire gently crackles and the cosy ambience tempts you to just one more drink.

Worth getting out of bed for

Winter is king at Bourbon Hotel, set at 1850 — Courchevel’s literal and figurative crown — overlooking the Stade de Slalom and handily placed for taking the Chenus gondola up the hill. Co-ordinates aside, a slopeside ski room is where you can check kit in and out and warm your boots; plus, hotel staff can arrange everything from lift passes to equipment hire and tuition. Beyond skiing and snowboarding, the station has its own ice rink for gliding sans gradient; snowshoeing tours offer a quieter take on mountain time, and sunrise hot-air balloon rides lift off from the Altiport to reveal the Three Valleys in all their snow-coated splendour.

Local restaurants

At the top of the Loze chairlift, La Soucoupe will lure you in with its scenic sun terrace and fill you up with truffle-topped boîtes-chaudes and triumphant chateaubriand. Savoyard favourites such as raclette, tartiflette and fondue are starred at Le Chalet de Pierres, also on the slopes beside the Verdons piste. For standout sushi and elevated Japanese plates, Susoman has an outpost in 1850, where you can graze on wagyu beef tacos, wasabi prawns and sashimi taquitos, accompanied by craft cocktails and a buzzing late-bar atmosphere.

Local cafés

On Rue des Tovets, head to the 1850 branch of Au Pain d’Antan, a locally loved batch of bakeries with a patisserie game that’s as strong as its glossy pastries output.

Local bars

La Bouchonnerie is a wine bar with a menu of tapas tucked into Ava Restaurant in Courchevel 1850. Le Tremplin is your sun-bathed après-ski spot in which to sink a cold beer and people-watch contentedly.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this thrilling Three Valleys hotel and unpacked their Merrells and merino, a full account of their upscale ski break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Bourbon Hotel in Courchevel…

In keeping with its namesake spirit, Bourbon Hotel in Courchevel 1850 has a warming glow that's designed to enamour. It’s true that its makeover from Studio Henry invokes a bourbon-inspired palette of ambers, cocoa-hued timbers and russet marble; and that lighting throughout is dialled down to the sunset-like seduction of an intimate lounge bar.

The glow at this 31-key retreat, however, is not just literal. Its winter-only set-up means that interiors throughout are dedicated to cocooning cosiness: deep-pile carpets, British-wool upholstery and cheer-bringing fireplaces; plus, a sauna and steam room at the spa, primed to ease trail-weary muscles. Chef Simone’s polished line-up of Italian classics at Simonetta is heart-warming stuff, too.

But like any good cocktail, the hotel also has a secret ingredient. From the group that brought you Hôtel Saint-Georges, Bus Palladium and Hôtel La Ponche, Bourbon is laced with Chapitre Six’s trademark flair for fashion-forward stays delivered with unassuming polish — a hotel pedigree that puts this newcomer high on our winter hotlist.
