Luxury holidays in Arundel

Fair of face and packed with history, the enchanting market town of Arundel makes a fine retreat from the anxieties of modern life. Nestled in the vale of the South Downs, this hilltop town boasts a majestic medieval castle, Gothic-revival cathedral and pristine Jacobean gardens. No wonder it’s been hailed as the most mindful destination in Europe. Along the gentle hum of the Ardun, life rallies to a different beat, contemplative, unhurried, firmly in the present, but certainly not of it.

When to go

The town comes alive in August, with a ten-day art festival offering street food, music, boat races and theatre, but on crisp autumn mornings when imposing castle walls emerge from the mist, you’ll find yourself swooning.

Getting there

  • Planes

The closest international hub is London Gatwick. Find direct flights here from most major UK and European cities, as well as from the USA, Asia and the Middle East. By car, the journey takes just over an hour, though the regular Southern Rail train service from Gatwick gets you there in 50 minutes.
  • Automobiles

Parking can be a challenge in Arundel. With many scenic pedestrian trails, ditch the car and rack up the steps among the lush greens of the South Downs. If you must drive, pull up in a residential area just outside of the centre to avoid getting hit with a fine.
