Luxury holidays in Tivat

A coastal town in Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor, Tivat is famous for its plentiful sunshine, mountainous landscape and superyacht-filled marina. Only a decade ago, this seaside town attracted little international attention, but it underwent major change when a businessman bought the town’s old naval base, transforming it into a luxurious marina capable of accommodating the world’s largest yachts. It was a gutsy, build-it-and-they-will-come–style project, but it certainly paid off: the town has since become Montenegro’s ritziest enclave, with luxury hotels, fashion boutiques and fine dining restaurants popping up along the waterfront. That’s not to say you need to own a superyacht to have a good time, however. The bay looks just as beautiful from the local ferry.

When to go

June and September are the best time to visit. July and August are the most popular months, but the heat and crowds can makes things less pleasant.

Getting there

  • Planes

Tivat does have an international airport, but direct flights are limited to London Gatwick, and there are usually only two a week. Another route is to fly to Dubrovnik in nearby Croatia, then drive to Tivat, a journey of around two hours.
  • Automobiles

You won’t need a car if you’re planning to stay in Tivat, but your own set of wheels will come in handy if you want to take day trips up the coast. If you do want to hire, the Smith24 team can arrange it.
