Luxury holidays in Zakynthos

One of the largest islands in the Ionian Sea, pretty Zakynthos lies just off the west coast of Greece. The buzz of its capital and main harbour city (also named Zakynthos) centres around a waterfront main square and open-air seaside eateries. At nearby beaches – including Agios Nikolaos, Tsilivi and Makris Gialos – you’ll have a chance to dive into crystalline waters or lounge on sun-soaked stretches of sand. Ready to set sail? Explore the rugged west coast, where limestone cliffs dive straight into clear turquoise waters, en route to dramatic Navagio Beach – best known for its shipwreck-topped crescent of golden white sand (arrive eye-blearingly early to beat the crowds).

When to go

You’ve got to hand it to the Greek isles… summer temperatures in Zakynthos average around 26°C and seldom dip below 11°C, even in rainy December. Planning to spend mer-person-worthy lengths of time in the sea? Visit in August and you’ll swear it’s (salty) bath water.

Getting there

  • Planes

There are regular direct flights to Zakynthos Airport from the UK and across the Continent.
  • Boats

Thrice-daily ferry services run between mainland Greece and Zakynthos. If you’re skippering your own sailboat around the islands, be sure to book a mooring in advance (especially in the busy summer months).
  • Automobiles

It’s best to bring your own set of wheels if you want to explore the rugged inner island.
