Luxury holidays in Porvoo

In southern Finland, less than an hour from Helsinki, you'll find Porvoo, a storied town where dolls’-house-style boutiques line narrow cobblestone streets and traditional red or ochre warehouses overlook the river. Cultural highlights include numerous museums, a 15th-century cathedral and antique shops. Refuel at Porvoo’s many chocolatiers and eateries, making time to try local, boozy sweet treat, the Runeberg torte.

When to go

In winter, you can ski on illuminated trails through the city centre and explore the frozen river on foot or skates. Late May to early September steals the show, however — the city buzzes with river cruises, concerts and food festivals.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly into Helsinki Airport; from there, it’s roughly a 30-minute drive to reach Porvoo.
  • Automobiles

Porvoo is a 45-minute drive from Helsinki via the E18 Expressway. If you’re up for a bit of a longer journey, you can take the Old Porvoo Road (Highway 170), though it’s not the most scenic route. Buses from Helsinki Central Bus Station are a frequent and affordable alternative.
