Luxury holidays in Monteverde

Monteverde, a region in northern Costa Rica, is the gateway to Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve. Its mist-draped canopy may look untouched by time, but with conservation efforts in place since the 1970s, this area of outstanding beauty has long been ahead of the game. Walking trails barely scratch the surface of its 26,000 acres and prized biodiversity, and guided tours are the fast-track to understanding its forces of nature.

When to go

Monteverde’s dry season is from December to April, making conditions easier for exploring the forest and spotting resident wildlife.

Getting there

  • Planes

Regional flights serve Guanacaste, around two-and-a-half hours away from Monteverde; Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José is closer to a four-hour drive.
  • Automobiles

Driving in Monteverde is best left to experienced locals. Rather than hiring a set of wheels, you’ll want to stick with transfers and organised tours.
