Luxury holidays in Colonia del Sacramento

When to go

The warmest weather is between October and March, with temperatures peaking in January. Colonia is a popular weekend getaway for many Argentinians, so visit mid-week to have the cobbled streets to yourself.

Getting there

  • Planes

Fly into Montevideo, then drive about three hours to Colonia del Sacramento. Many choose to visit here as part of a trip to Buenos Aires, in which case fly into Jorge Newbery International Airport or Ezeiza International Airport, both are then 30 minutes’ drive from the ferry terminal, from where a 90-minute catamaran zips you across to Colonia.
  • Automobiles

Colonia Express ferries only take foot passengers, but you can bring your car on Buquebus boats. A car isn’t really necessary for Colonia del Sacramento, as it’s very small and walkable, plus other popular Uruguayan destinations are quite far by car (Punta del Este is at least four hours’ drive away, for example).
