Luxury holidays in Bijagua

Bijagua sits between the dormant Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes, and by the border of the Alajuela and Guanacaste provinces, cushioned by thriving rainforest and soaring peaks. It’s lovely to look at, but it’s even more fun when you throw yourself into the scenery with gusto: climbing mountain trails, tubing, whitewater-rafting, sloth-spotting, horse-riding… And, here’s where the famed Rio Celeste Waterfall cascades into a very blue lagoon.

When to go

Bijagua’s lush green forest is fed by frequent showers; the region’s at its driest from December to February, but otherwise, just bring a waterproof and the weather won’t hold you back.

Getting there

  • Planes

Liberia Guanacaste is a 90-minute drive away; Juan Santamaría Airport in San José is a four-hour drive away.
  • Automobiles

Rural roads make it worth hiring a four-wheel drive, or – slightly less stressful – securing a local driver.
