Wilson Island

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Local restaurants

There's nothing on Wilson Island but the resort's few buildings. Heron Island has an eatery or two.

Worth getting out of bed for

A stay at Wilson Island is all about relaxation, but if you do pull yourself out of your hammock, there's plnety of diversions, including playing bocce on the beach, slipping on some reef-walking shoes and wandering out into the water to spot giant turtles sunning themselves on exposed rocks, or to peer under the waves with the supplied 'sea scope'. Snorkelling can be dazzling, with reef sharks, rays, turtles and a prolific host of marine life darting in and out of the vast coral formations.

Diary

Mid-January–April Hatching season – hundreds of turtle hatchlings burst from the sand and make their first galumphing scrabble to the sea. June–October  Humpback whales visit the waters around Wilson as part of their annual migration north.
