The Sukhothai

Bangkok, Thailand

Local restaurants

At the Metropolitan Bangkok, 27 South Sathorn Road, Nahm (+66 (0)26 253 388) plates up rare, regional Thai cuisine by acclaimed Australian chef David Thompson, a must for serious epicures. Spring Dining Room/Summer Chocolate House (+66 (0)23 922 747), at 199 Soi Sukhumvit 49, has a stunning setting in a glass-fronted modernist home. By night its manicured lawns out front are littered with beanbags and tables where hip expats lounge. Spring has exquisite Thai food; next door, Summer is a chocolate café. Also on Silom Road, at 21/1 Saladaeng Colonnade in a residential complex, Italian restaurant Zanotti (+66 (0)26 360 002) serves a menu of mostly Piedmontese and Tuscan food. Try the pasta and the selection of 28 types of salami.

Local bars

Sky Bar (+66 (0)26 249 555) – in the State Tower 1055 on Silom Road in Bangrak – offers some of the most amazing views in town, and a romantic spot to sling a martini.

Worth getting out of bed for

Bangkok is dotted with impressive edifices testifying to its importance as a royal and spiritual centre. The Grand Palace is a bewitching visual feast, home to Wat Phra Kaeo, the sacred temple of the Emerald Buddha. The Thailand Creative & Design Centre (www.tcdc.or.th) in the Emporium shopping centre hosts regular contemporary design exhibitions. Jim Thompson House hosts a stunning collection of furniture, art and antiques at 6/1 Soi Kasemsan 2, off Rama 1 Road (www.jimthompsonhouse.com).

Diary

January–February Chinese New Year is extravagantly celebrated by Bangkok’s Thai-Chinese population and Chinatown is awash with festive colour. May Visakha Bucha Day celebrates the life of Buddha; a major highlight is the candlelit evening procession around Wat Benjamabophit. November Every river and khlong glitters with a romantic flotilla of tiny candlelit craft for the Loy Krathong celebrations. December Tap toes and snap fingers at the Bangkok Jazz Festival – one of Asia’s biggest (www.bangkokjazzfestival.com).
