Dakota (+1 323 769 8888) at the Roosevelt hotel on Hollywood Boulevard is a dark and dramatic steakhouse with brown velvet seats and a dressed-up retro feel. LA’s best Mexican food can arguably be found at family-owned El Cholo at 1121 South Western Avenue (+1 323 734 2773), where the menu has changed little since 1927. Gwen Stefani and Jake Gyllenhaal are fans of Mozza (+1 323 297 0101) on North Highland at Melrose Avenue, a buzzy, high-brow pizzeria with top-notch Italian fare.

On Sunset, the Fountain Coffee Room at the Beverly Hills Hotel has a 1940s retro atmosphere from the golden age of film. For wonderful space-age ‘Googie’ architecture and decent coffee, try Norms on North La Cienega Boulevard in West Hollywood.
