Style Shophouse chic
Setting Georgetown's heritage heart
Deep in the heart of Georgetown’s Unesco-listed Heritage Zone, Straits Collection boutique hotel is the latest project of Australian expat Narelle McMurtrie. This inspired hotel/holiday house concept is made up of four shabby-chic shophouses on arty Armenian Street, offering a choice of one and two bedrooms, and unique indoor/outdoor spaces, including central courtyards and open-air bathrooms. Narelle's trademark interiors blend a reverence for the traditions and crafts of Penang with a kaleidoscope of colours and textures.

Hotel restaurant
There's no restaurant here, but owner Narelle McMurtie's latest project, China House (www.chinahouse.com.my), is just a five-minute walk from the hotel. You could easily spend a whole day in this sprawling restaurant and gallery complex, which is spread over three heritage buildings on Beach and Victoria streets. Tuck into all-day breakfasts at Kopi C. Espresso, linger over coffee and cake at Beach St. Bakery, lunch on American-style streetfood and international tapas at Canteen & Bar, knock back a burger at Courtyard Café, or settle in for a fusion feast at BTB & Restaurant.

Hotel bar
Also at China House, a short hop away, Vine & Single is a laid-back setting for sipping imported wines and single malts.

Our favourite rooms
Located beside a string of boutiques, the four Chinese shophouses on Armenian Street offer a mix of one- and two-bedroom abodes. No 89 can sleep up to five on two floors, so it's ideal for families. If you're travelling à deux, opt for No 93, which has an indoor courtyard with an antique wooden bath tub.
Packing tips
Cut a stylish figure on your strolls around Georgetown by keeping the sun off with a Panama hat or dainty parasol. Don't worry about packing a sarong though, as you can borrow one from your room.
