A hideaway for Hollywood since the golden days, Colony Palms Hotel has seen a scandal or two in its time. Incarnated in the 1930s by some trickster mobsters who pretended this brothel and speakeasy was a hotel, it now really is one. It sits next to the San Jacinto mountains in the Californian desert, with a colonial Spanish exterior, a Moroccan-styled interior and a poolside-party-scene restaurant.

Poolside Purple Palm masters the art of Mediterranean cooking in a setting that’s pure California – custom-made wallpaper, pictures of palm trees and starlets and huge antique mirrors reflecting the bright blue sky. Specialities include hanger steak, lobster macaroni and assorted herb-crusted meats, including wild boar and lamb loin. -
Dress code
Hollywood in its heyday, or tribal glamour to match the hand-woven headboards in your room. -
Top table
During the day, stay poolside, under the tasselled awning. In the evening when the desert temperature dips, head inside. -
Last orders
Breakfast is served from 8am until 11am; lunch is 11am–2pm; dinner is from 6pm until 10pm. -
Room service
You can order anything from the restaurant menu between 8am and 10pm. -
Hotel bar
The breezy, wood-panelled bar is designed and located to cater to the poolside crowd – prop yourself up on a leather barstool or settle on a sunlounger and sip a signature lavender mojito or margarita. And if it’s after hours, help yourself to the premium selection of full-size spirits in your room.

Our favourite rooms
Suite 46 is biggest – it packs in a claw-footed roll-top bath, a wooden four-poster bed, tiled fireplace and roof, and two leather armchairs. For privacy, pick a casita – they’re secreted away in the garden with their own little courtyards.

Visors to shield eyes from the desert blaze and sand blasts; a pink Cadillac to escape to Palm Springs in.
